League Expansion Dispute: NWFL Championship Forum Petitions National Sports Commission

League Expansion Dispute: NWFL Championship Forum Petitions National Sports Commission

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) finds itself embroiled in controversy following its Annual General Assembly (AGA) held on December 17, 2024, in Abuja. The AGA, which should have marked another milestone for women’s football, has instead become a focal point of tension due to allegations of democratic violations by the NWFL Board, led by Chairperson Nkechi Obi.

At the heart of the matter is the proposed expansion of the NWFL Premiership from 16 to 20 teams, a move supported by a clear majority of the 35 delegates present. According to a petition submitted to the National Sports Commission by the NWFL Championship Forum, 22 delegates voted in favor of the expansion, and 16 backed its immediate implementation in the 2024/2025 season. Despite this, the NWFL Board allegedly overruled these decisions, opting instead for a controversial draw and delaying the implementation of the expansion.

In addition, the congress supported maintaining the NWFL Championship structure with 20 teams and no relegations for the upcoming season due to the absence of a third-tier league. These recommendations were also reportedly dismissed, prompting widespread discontent among stakeholders.

Forum Appeals for Intervention

The petition, signed by Forum Chairman Jimoh Daudu and Vice Chairman Aminu K. Shuaibu, calls on the National Sports Commission to intervene. It demands that the NWFL Board respect the AGA’s democratic outcomes, admit Osun Babes, Sunshine Queens, Royal Queens, and Pelican Stars into the Premiership, and maintain the Championship’s current structure.

“This blatant disregard for democratic decisions undermines the growth and inclusivity of women’s football,” the petition reads. “We urge the Commission to take decisive steps to rectify these irregularities for the sake of progress,” the petition reads.

Akanni Seyi

In a place where dreams of stardom were often confined to the realm of possibility, one teenager stood out. Adeleke Fawaz, a fast rising footballer whose determination and brilliance on the field is making statement.

From an early age, Fawaz showed an unwavering passion for the sport, often practicing late into the evening.

Despite facing countless obstacles and doubts from those around him, Fawaz's love for the game fueled his perseverance. He knew talent alone would never be enough, he continued his secondary school education in the foremost co-educational institute in Osun State, Lanreleke Sports Academy, Ile-Ogbo.

Born and bread in Osogbo where he had his primary school education, his trajectory into 'Future Eagles' shows his determination to rise to stardom from local hopeful to a national prospect.

Fawaz's quality is a motivation for his peers because he excelled where others failed. His journey was not without setbacks, but his resilience only grew stronger. He used each challenge as motivation to push harder, train smarter, and never back down from a difficult situation.

His breakthrough came during Osun Principal's Cup tournament, where he showcased his extraordinary skills: his impeccable ball control, sharp decision-making, and natural ability to read the game, providing a link between defence and attack.

Everyone in the stands couldn’t ignore the 14-year old's brilliance, a born leader elevating the performances of his teammates, following quality tutelage and lifestyle from the reputable academy. His call-up to the national cadet team, is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and undeniable talent.

It was a moment of triumph not just for him, but for his entire community and institute, who had watched him grow from a hopeful kid with a ball at his feet to a national prospect with a future in the sport. It is the beginning of a new chapter for himself and other teammates who are showing promising future in Morocco despite losing 0-2 to the host's U-17 yesterday.

Lanreleke Sports Academy Ile-Ogbo, the venue of the crucial encounter will come alive as glory seekers rumble on the lush green of the co-educational institute's sports complex.

In a chat with defence trojan, Solomon Boyo, our new recruits who earned his full debut under Seye Ajayi last week shared his unwavering optimism as 'Believe And Achieve' gears up for a challenging matchup against a familiar foe.

Despite the dominant nature of the opponents, most especially in the last four meetings, Boyo expressed confidence in his teammate's ability to rise to the occasion and turn things around.

"We know it's going to be a tough test," he said, "but we’ve been working hard and we trust each other. I believe we have what it takes to come out on top, no panic, and no pressure either, all we want is three maximum points." His words reflect the strong bond within the team and the determination to prove themselves against high-caliber opposition.

"We’ve been focusing on fine-tuning our game plan and making sure we’re all on the same page. We’re not worried about what the other team does, we’re more focused on executing our own strategies to the best of our ability, we want to storm Owerri next week with sheer optimism but we take it game by game, starting from tomorrow," Boyo who had a remarkable performance against Osun Utd, in far away Eket last season, while donning FC ONE Rocket jerseys expressed.

Olalere Hakeem, Osun Utd Midfielder Juiced Up For New Season

Olalere Hakeem, Osun Utd Midfielder Juiced Up For New Season

Omoluabi Giants Midfielder in recent months has been playing like a player reborn. Olalere who couldn't enjoy more actions last season has got back his groove, contributing immensely towards team's success, shaping up approaches and squad orientation.

United is currently partaking in the second preseason outings in far away Kaduna, since resumption in July, as Seye Ajayi posed to present a squad that would surpass expectations.

'Kebu' as he's fondly called is blessed with initiatives, a forward thinking individual keeping the standard, cool on the ball, dictating the tempo with composure and calmness.

The former 3SC playmaker keeps possession well but always looks to play the ball forward. Always alerted with first touch on the half turn when the ball is played to him on the ground, he does this perfectly in his last 450 minutes of preseason actions.

He has gained more fans recently with his brand of football, he doesn’t delay passes and releases the ball promptly to avoid being dispossessed of the ball with avoidable injury from opponents. Osun FA Awards 2024: Governor Ademola Adeleke to Be Honored with Football Excellence Award for Transformative Sports Leadership.

In a celebration of his transformative leadership and unwavering commitment to sports development, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State is set to receive the prestigious Football Excellence Award at the Osun Football Association (FA) Awards ceremony. The highly anticipated event will take place on Friday, December 6th, at the iconic Mosab Mega Hall, Ring Road, Osogbo, drawing dignitaries, sports enthusiasts, and community leaders from across the state and beyond.

The Football Excellence Award is a testament to Governor Adeleke’s extraordinary contributions to the growth of football and sports infrastructure in Osun State. Since assuming office, his administration has embarked on an ambitious journey to reposition Osun as a hub of athletic talent and sports tourism, with football at its core.

One of Governor Adeleke’s hallmark initiatives is the comprehensive renovation of the Osogbo City Stadium. Once a facility struggling to meet modern standards, the stadium is already undergoing a remarkable transformation under the Governor’s leadership. Upgraded seating, improved playing surfaces, modern lighting, and enhanced security measures will in no time ensure that athletes and fans alike experience sports in a world-class environment. The stadium will become a beacon of pride, hosting local and regional tournaments that attract thousands, once it is completed.

Governor Adeleke has also prioritized the development of Osun’s two major football teams, Osun United and Osun Babes. His administration’s financial support has stabilized the clubs, enabling them to compete effectively in their respective leagues.

The Governor's impact extends beyond the professional arena. Recognizing that grassroots development is the bedrock of sustainable sports growth, Governor Adeleke launched initiatives to scout and nurture young football talents across the state. Through inter-school competitions, like the Governor's Cup and community-based leagues, budding athletes now have a structured pathway to professional careers.

The Chairman of the Osun Football Association, Mayor Sola Fanawopo, lauded Governor Adeleke for his groundbreaking contributions to football. “Since his Excellency assumed office, Osun has witnessed an unprecedented revival in its sports sector, particularly football. The Governor’s passion, strategic investments, and hands-on leadership have not only elevated our teams but have also inspired the entire state. He is truly deserving of this award,” Fanawopo remarked.

Fanawopo further emphasized that the Football Excellence Award is not merely a recognition of past achievements but also an encouragement to continue the remarkable work. He noted that the ripple effects of Governor Adeleke's sports policies are already evident, with Osun athletes gaining national recognition and the state’s footballing reputation soaring.

The Osun FA Awards ceremony promises to be a night of glamour and celebration, bringing together the who’s who of the football and sports community. Apart from Governor Adeleke’s honor, the event will recognize outstanding players, coaches, and administrators who have contributed to the development of football in the state.

Governor Ademola Adeleke’s recognition as a champion of sports is emblematic of his broader governance philosophy: using sports as a tool for youth engagement, community development, and economic growth. By revitalizing football, he is not only creating opportunities for young talents but also fostering unity and pride among the people of Osun State.

As December 6th approaches, the anticipation grows, not just for the award ceremony but for what lies ahead under the dynamic leadership of Governor Adeleke. With his continued dedication, the future of football and sports in Osun looks brighter than ever.

Ololade Demands Merit-Based Approach, Warns Interlopers As Osun Utd Coaches Converse Players' Final Cut

In the current task of identifying, assessing, monitoring, and ultimately acquiring players for Omoluabi Giants who will represent the state in the forthcoming season, Seye Ajayi led Technical Crew have been charged to acquire sterling, phenomenal and illustrious talents, presenting a squad devoid of sentiments.

The club chairman, Gbenga Ololade noted in a chat with pressmen in Osogbo Township Stadium having realised how players recruitment has evolved significantly in both scope and complexity.

United would be looking to add the necessary shifts to achieve the desired goals in the new season starting next month, recognise players as the chief cornerstone resource.

Likewise, securing the finest talents available in an era dominated by bias and sentiments would mean coaches need to stand upright and spearhead the assemblage of optimal squad following rigorous players evaluation.

"We need to get it right from this stage, we are all working round the clock to make sure the best legs are recruited.

"It's important to fill the existing vacuum with expertise and excellence. With the free hand enjoyed by the coaches while doing their assessments, we expect a squad capable of achieving our targets of playing in the premiership.

"We have assured our principal of hitting the target and the government is keen on seeing us flying high, knowing fully well that the competition would be so tough. We appreciate the government for the timely supports rendered to us, although we have been assured of more supports and motivations.

"I am therefore optimistic that our coaches won't listen to invaders while giving us their best. The most important thing is to get it right at this stage in order not to suffer the consequences." Ololade who's the newly pronounced management head charged.

Ogunmodede was with us spiritually in win against Nasarawa United- Coach Kamil 'Lama'

Ogunmodede was with us spiritually in win against Nasarawa United- Coach Kamil 'Lama'

Coach Sulaimon Kamil has insisted that Head Coach Daniel Ogunmodede was spiritually with Remo Stars in the 3-0 thrashing of Nasarawa United on Matchday Six.

Three second half goals from Sikiru Alimi, Stanley Joseph and Ismaila Sodiq secured the maximum 3points for the Sky Blue Stars.

A delightful Lama while giving credit to the lads, also reckoned that he didn't change the match plan despite going into halftime goalless.

"The 3 points was a hard-fought one and a morale boost for the team. They deserve all the credit, as it was not easy scoring three second-half goals and keeping a clean sheet.

"The lads lived up to the hype, despite Ogunmodede not on the bench but on national assignment with the Super Eagles for the botched AFCON 2025 qualifier against Libya in Benghazi.

"Ogunmodede 'IjaBall' was with us spiritually, as we only misses his physical presence."

On the three goal scoreline, " I didn't introduce anything differently, we followed his (IjaBall) match philosophy, tentatively we built on the foundation he laid."

On the two games (Abia Warriors and Nasarawa United), he has been in charge in the absence of his boss, Ogunmodede.

"First was an away game, while the second was at home, delighted with the 6 points and for the fact that the team will build on it going forward.

"With 12 points in the bag before the game against the Solid Miners, the plan is to garner 15 points from the next five matches. We have earned 3 points, so the chase is on for 12 points, starting with the game against Plateau United."

Lama also gave kudos to Sikiru Alimi who ended his goal drought with his first of the 2024/2025 campaign.

"Brilliant play from Alimi, I was delighted with his performance. He kept his cool and focus, not easy going five matches without finding the back of the net, am happy he has finally opened his goal account for the new season.

"Now that he has got his goal, Alimi will certainly keep scoring goals for the team," Lama insists.
