Bayelsa Queens claimed the coveted trophy meant for the winner of 2020 Flying Officers Cup after pipping their fellow Nigeria Women Football League NWFL rival Nasarawa Amazon by a lone goal today at Guards Brigade Stadium Abuja.

Having caused the heart break for Edo Queens in the first semi final fixtures when Jumoke Alani agonizingly goofed with Igwe Uzoamaka long loop while Alani directed the ball into her own net, thereby advancing to the final of the Flying Officers Cup.

Bayelsa Queens have been on the front foot with some incisive footies and brilliant exchanges in the opening stages of the crunchy tie, their effort finally paid off in the sixteen minutes as Barakat Olaiya blasted a well crafted loop beyond

Uchenna Chukwu.

A resilient Christopher Danjuma tutored side responded with positive characters but their efforts refused to restore the needed parity as Igboamalu delivers a well planted header which Okeke parries and rattles the woodwork.

Nasarawa Amazon surge forward and piled more pressure on their opponents but Queens stood their ground in the dying minutes and finally became the runaway champions.

The epic final which is witnessed by the parents of Arotile Tolulope lived to its billing as Madam Aisha Falode the

Chairperson of the Nigeria Women Football League performed the opening declarations, while mother of the late Flying Officer Mrs Arotile performed the official kick

The management of the Nigeria Women Football League, headed by Aisha Falode, has urged the eight remaining clubs in the NWFL Premiership that are yet to complete their Club Licensing and registration for the 2020/2021 season to do so, as a matter of urgency as the date for the league resumption is around the corner and may not be shifted.

The clubs yet to complete their Club Licencing and Registration process include;  Adamawa Queens of Yola, Ibom Angels of Uyo, Confluence Queens of Lokoja, Pelican Stars of Calabar, Dream Stars of Lagos and

She added that, all the sixteen clubs for the 2020/21 season were duly informed about the club Licencing procedures and given enough time to plan for the new season including the clubs' remunerations guarantee for players, coaches and club managers.

It's better to start the league on time and finish as planned without a spill over.

Under-dogs ABS FC beat their local rivals Kwara United 5-4 on penalties to renew another clash with Gombe United in the final of the 8th edition of the Ogunjobi Gold Cup Pre-Season Tournament in Ilorin.

The Ilorin Derby lived up to its hype as it ended in a 4-goal thriller, thus needing penalty shoot out to decide who goes through to Friday's finale.

The first 30 minutes of the game was a drab one as both goalkeepers didn't have much to do as there were no real threats at goal.

The real chance then came in the 35th for Kwara United but ABS FC goalie Nasiru Toheeb stood tall to deny Chinedu Ufere the first goal of the game with a point blank save while Issa Mogaji put his effort wide from the rebound.

It was then Kwara United against Toheeb, as six minutes later, Ufere with another glorious chance to give the Harmony Boys the lead but his low drive shot was put to the corner by lanky shot stopper, who had his reflexes to thank for the fabulous save.

Adeleke Ajibola should have made it 1-0 in the 43rd minute but his left foot shot at goal was not strong enough to beat Toheeb.

ABS FC in the 45th with their first real chance almost shocked Kwara United after Kale Aliami rattled the crossbar with a sublime volley, that left goalkeeper Iwu in ewe.

A rejuvenated Kwara United took the game to ABS FC as they got the breakthrough in the 46th minute after Abiola Lateef nodded home a cross from Alamoyo Sodiq to put scores at 1-0.

Debutants Gombe United have zoomed to the final of the Ogunjobi Gold Cup 8th edition after they stung Remo Stars 7-6 on penalties in the first semi-final tie played at the Kwara Sports Complex, Ilorin on Wednesday morning.

It was end-to-end football from both teams, but Remo Stars were lucky not to have lost the game from open play when the ball beat their goalkeeper to hit the crossbar in the second half.

Both teams tried to match themselves size for size in the first half as there was no clear cut chances for either to score the opening goal.

The second 45 minutes proved to be the better half as in the one hour mark, Gombe United attacking midfielder Arinze Oyota was unlucky not to have scored the first goal of the game after he hit a long range cannon that rattled the crossbar.

It was a brilliant moment for Barnabas Daniel to score his third goal of the pre-season tourney in the 80th minute but is well timed shot after he beat his marker was parried away by goalkeeper Kayode Bankole of Remo Stars.

With no team scoring a winning goal, penalty kicks was needed to decide which team progress to the final after the match official signalled the end of the game after the 94th minute.

It was a thrilling penalty shoot out with the players sending the goalkeepers the wrong way after five spot kicks.

It was tension for Gombe United as goalkeeper Bankole almost made a save from their six penalty kick but the ball was fast enough to beat the goalie who went the right way.

It was hard luck joint top scorer of the Ogunjobi Gold Cup Yusuf, as he watched Gombe United shot stopper Abraham, save his penalty kick.

Captain of the Savannah Scorpions Chigozie made no mistake converting from the spot as his penalty took his team to Friday's final.

Gombe United will lock horns on Friday November 20, 2020 against the winner of the second semi-final Ilorin derby tie between ABS FC and Kwara United.

"Going forward, we still have another hurdle to cross in Niger Tornadoes. I expect a tough game as they are the defending champions."

About the positives of the pre-season tourney, "I think in the last five years, Remo Stars have not missed any edition of the Ogunjobi Gold Cup, as the prestigious tournament has been a good platform for teams to test their new players in the team and also perfect different game plans.

Remembering Nigeria's Unsung Olympic Medalist Whose Picture Adorned Olympic Notebook in 1980s

By Adewale Tijani

Emmanuel Ifeajuna is a very controversial personalty in the history of Nigeria. In Sports Circle, he was a hero. In the country's political history, Ifeajuna was a villain. Among some Igbo, he was a betrayal.

Emmanuel Ifeajuna was Nigeria's first gold medalist in international competition. A High jumper, he won gold medal for Nigeria at Commonwealth Games in Canada in 1957.

Thereafter he joined the Nigerian Army and was one of the five majors who carried out Nigeria's first military coup in January 1966. He fled to Ghana when the coup failed but was brought back to Nigeria later.

He thereafter joined the Biafran Army and fought for the secessionists during the Nigerian Civil War. But he was arrested, tried and found guilty of plotting to overthrow General Ojukwu, the Briafran leader. He was subsequently executed in 1967 alongside Colonel Victor Banjo (Prof Mrs Omigbodun's father) and Major Alale.

Late Ifeajuna was an alumnus of University of Ibadan. In fact, he won the gold medal for Nigeria while he was still an undergraduate in U.I.

He was a close friend of Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Commonwealth Secretary General. Both hailed from the same area and attended U.I  and were friends during their undergraduate days.

Ifeajuna made history in both Sports and Politics, though positively and negatively. But sadly, most Nigerians often remember him for his tragic role in Nigeria's second bloodiest coup. And this is reason, successive regimes and sports administrators refused to honour him as Nigeria's sports hero.

Even in the Olympic Notebook which had a drawing of his image. His name was not written on the notebook, and so many did not know the man that was drawn on the notebook.

May be in future, a Pharaoh who would know the value of Joseph might emerge. Then unsung heroes like Emmanuel Ifeajuna might be given the honour they deserved.
