The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, NWF has lauded Olarinoye Adenike Adijat on her superlative performance on Saturday after she won Team Nigeria's first gold medal in weightlifting at the ongoing Commonwealth Games, tagged Birmingham 2022 in England


The 23-year old Adijat won Nigeria's first gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games on Saturday while also setting a new record. 


She lifted total of 203kg with 92kg in snatch and 111kg in clean and jerk in the women category to land Team Nigeria's first gold medal. 


She beat India's Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam who lifted 202kg to win silver while Fraer Morrow of England won bronze in 198kg lift 


Reacting to Olarinoye's feat, Nigeria Weightlifting Federation President, Dr Ibrahim Abdul expressed delight and gave glory to God for seeing her efforts and that of the NWF board in respositioning weightlifting in Nigeria, come through.


“I am very elated with Adijat's feat today (yesterday) Prior to the competition, I told her to be confident, to believe she can do it. And she did it. 


“The board of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation and the entire Nigerians are indeed proud of her. As the president of the federation who have watched her closely, I never doubted her capacity and potentials. Her victory is a testament of our commitment not reposition weightlifting in the country and that is why the federation been extra mile to ensure that they started camping as far back as April.


"Recall that few months after we assumed office last year, she won silver at the IWF (International Weightlifting Federation) Championship in Uzbekistan and this is a step forward in reaching her stardom," he said. 


He lauded the coaching crew as well as President Mohammed Buhari for their support adding that Team Nigeria remains optimistic of more medals in weightlifting.


“The coaches, led by the technical director, Chris Nwadieh have been phenomenal. I am happy that their hard works have continued to yield fantastic results. 


“I want to also thank the father of the nation, President Muhammadu Buhari who through the Honourable Minister of youth and sports, Chief Sunday Dare has remained supportive. 


“This gold, to the glory of God, is the beginning of more medals to come from the weightlifting team. All we need from Nigerians, which they have continued to display, is prayer and support."


Adijat Olarinoye's gold medal feat also set a new record in the weightlifting in the Commonwealth Games.


With the gold, Nigeria is placed 9th on the overall medals table but 3rd in the Weightlifting medals table after Malaysia and India in first and second places, respectively.


Meanwhile, Nigeria's quest to win more medals in weightlifting at the Birmingham 2022 Games will continue today as two atheists will be in action


Umoafia Edidiong will be seeking for Nigeria's second medal in 67kg  male category by 9:30am while Rafiatu Lawal will comepte in the 59kg women category 2:00pm

Organizers of the nation's prestigious pre-season football tourney, Ogunjobi Gold Cup have sent a congratulatory message to Remo Stars after they picked a ticket to fly Nigeria's flag in the CAF Confederation Cup come next season.



General Coordinator of the tournament, Tunde Shamsudeen tasked the Sky Blue Stars management to set a record, by becoming the first NPFL team to win the Confederation Cup.



"Congratulations to a business mogul, biggest private investor of the beautiful game in Nigeria and a fine gentleman, who's humility is second to none, Honorable Kunle Soname.



"He has proven to critics of the NPFL that private investors can achieve successes investing in club football, with Remo Stars as an example having secured the CAF Confederations Cup qualification after three attempts in Nigeria's topflight division.



"CAF Confederation Cup debutant Remo Stars, crowned champions of the 9th edition of the Ogunjobi Gold Cup in Ikenne, is a huge boost to the tourney. 



"Ogunjobi Gold Cup has once again made a bold statement, as not just a pre-season tournament but a platform were champions are made.



"We are delighted to be part of Remo Stars achievements, as they have surpassed their fans expectations and truly deserved to clinch the CAF ticket.



"I want to use this medium to charge the Remo Stars not to make the numbers in the tournament but be one of the teams contending for the trophy.



"The Confederations Cup, since it was formed in 2004, only Sunshine Stars made it to the semi-finals in their first attempt in 2011. So Remo Stars surpassing the feat.

Meanwhile, Shamsudeen also expressed his relief after Niger Tornadoes and Shooting Stars retained their NPFL status after a turbid season.



"Our last edition semi-finalist, Tornadoes and runners-up Shooting Stars distinguished themselves as fighters, as they fought hard till the very end of the season to secure their status in the topflight division come next season."



As regards MFM FC, sad the Olukoya Boys got relegated to the Nigeria National League, that doesn't mean end of the world for the club, rather a new challenge. 



Going by the words of Fetus Allen after the season ending game against Nasarawa United.



"We are confirmed relegated but that is not the end of life. I am confident that we will be back in the NPFL very soon. This is one of the pendulums of life. We just have to face it."


This we have charged the MFM FC management, as all hands must be on deck to see they gain promotion as it's a different ball game in the NNL.

Eight Teams To Jostle For Ogunjobi Memorial Cup

The Main Organizing Committee for the maiden edition of the  Western Nigeria Football Forum/Late Taiwo Ogunjobi U 15 Memorial Cup and Award  Ceremony has approved eight teams for the tournament scheduled to hold in Osogbo .


The football competition and award ceremony, according to Main Organizing Committee after its inaugural meeting held in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, disclosed that the football event will hold as from 16th August to 21st with the award ceremony holding in the evening of the final.


According to Otunba Tade Azeez, Co- Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee, each state in the South West of Nigeria will present a team, while the Champions of the  NPFL/LaLiga U15 Future Champions football competition, Remo Stars FC and the 2nd runner up Katsina United FC will join the six teams to make up the participating teams so as to give the competition a national scope. Shooting Stars FC, the 1st runner up are already in the competition through Oyo State team which is the reason why Katsina United FC was invited.


In his comment, the the Co-Chairman, Otunba Dele Ajayi commended the efforts of the Western Nigeria Football Forum Coordinator and 1st Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Barrister Seyi Akinwumi for the initiative and he stated that with time, the tournament will attract teams from outside the country because late Taiwo Ogunjobi is known world wide and as such, he should be accorded such honor.

The management of Nationwide League One outfits, Hammola lnt'l FC of Ido Osun have named coach Mudathir Adekunle as the club's head coach but in acting capacity.


Following the resignation letter received from the club's Technical Adviser, Abdulazeez Abdulrasaq, the management have since pronounced Mudathir Adekunle as the head of technical crew.


Jamiu Mudathir Adekunle, a certified NIS coach who has worked as assistant to the just departed coach will continue to pilot the technical affairs henceforth untill the new technical adviser will be named.


With a nose for players development and stability, Mudathir has proved himself beyond doubt that he even command the respects of players on and off the pitch.


Lee Bombers as they are fondly called will aim to finish in appreciable position on the Nationwide League One Division One log and finally debut in the National Challenge Cup tagged Aiteo Cup 2022.

The Management Board of Ekiti United FC has suspended the club secretary, Ayodeji Olowolafe for negligence.


The board after an exhaustive meeting on Monday morning in Ado-Ekiti concluded that Mr Olowolafe should be suspended till the end of the 2021-22 Nigeria National League season as recommended by the five man panel constituted to unravel reasons why Ekiti United FC vs Ibom Youths FC match was botched on 22nd of June 2022.


According to the board, Mr Olowolafe as the club secretary was found guilty for failure to produce the team licenses for match day 18 game between Ekiti United FC vs Ibom Youth FC.


As a result of this, the board hereby suspends Mr. Ayodeji Olowolafe for the remainder of the League season.


The board also in its meeting frowned at the decision of the Nigeria National League, NNL for awarding three points and three goals to Ibom Youths FC without due process.


The board noted that NNL  should sanction Ibom Youths FC for leaving Ekiti State in the early hours of 23rd June, 2022 without honouring the match which was agreed by both clubs to be played same day at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado-Ekiti.


The board hereby called on the league body to as a matter of urgency reverse its decision of awarding three points three goals awarded to Ibom Youths FC by fixing a new date for the match to be played.

Osun FA Boss Okays 8 Sub-Committees For Taiwo Ogunjobi U-15 Tourney




Local Organizing Committee of the maiden edition of Taiwo Ogunjobi Memorial U-15 Football Tournament and Awards Night billed for Tuesday August 16, through Sunday August 21, 2022, has released a list of Eight (8) Sub-Committees.



The forum of all the South West States Football Associations under the aegis of the Western Nigeria Football Forum (WNFF) are using the U-15 championship to immortalise the former General Secretary of the Nigerian Football Association (NFA), late Chief Taiwo Joseph Ogunjobi.



In the eight (8) Sub-Committees of the tournament, General Coordinator of the nation's prestigious domestic league pre-season tourney, Tunde Shamsudeen, has been listed into two Sub-Committees.



Shamsudeen who hosts yearly the Ogunjobi Gold Cup Preseason Tournament was listed as the Chairman of Award/Media & Publicity Committee and a member of Entertainment Committee, while the Media Director of Osun United, Seyi Akanni was named in the media team.



Shamsudeen and Akanni are to bring to play their solid years of media experience and sports reportage, as they are to oversee the Award/Media & Publicity Committees with Prince Dauda Abimbola.



Prince Adeogun Isiaka alongside Tunde Shamsudeen, Odun Festus and Tunde Adebiyi are to make plans as regards entertainment committee.



In the other Sub Committees, Hon.Rawlings Oyebayo and Olufemi Bankefa are to deliberate on matters concerning Security.



The Referee Committee, has the trio of Hon. Adio Suleiman, Mr. Latunde Gbenga and Mr Tunde Adebiyi.



Honourable Adio Suleiman who is Chairman of the Ref's Committee is also the Chairman of a three-man Finance Committee with Engr. Aina Kehinde and Mr Sola Fayoyiwa.



The Medical Committee consist of Alhaji Omolaja Najeem, Hon.Rawlings Oyebayo and Elder Adelowo.



Furthermore, members of the championship Local Organizing Committee (LOC) are members of the Facilities/Pitch/Accommodation and Disciplinary Sub-Committees.



Recall, the WNFF led by the First Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Barrister Seyi Akinwumi, last weekend disclosed that in honour of late Ogunjobi and what he stood for during his lifetime, the events is aimed to promote youth and grassroots football development and celebrate distinguished sports stakeholders in the region.
