Gabriel Adepoju opened the scoring with a stunning finish in the 48th minute, followed by Kingsley Ogunmola, who extended their lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute, marking their second win after an opening day loss to FC Ebedei.

Lobi Stars, on the other hand, will regret their missed opportunities, conceding a goal in the 56th minute due to an unfortunate own goal by Akile Monday. They must now defeat Seamoriow FC and score more goals to have a chance at advancing to the semifinal.

Ebenezer Odeyemi established himself as the leading scorer with three goals after helping Crown FC secure a resounding 5-2 victory over Stormers SC. Alive And Kicking Nigeria: Osun State To Host Pioneering Ball Manufacturing Plant

Alive And Kicking Nigeria: Osun State To Host Pioneering Ball Manufacturing Plant

_Osun State Attracts Multi-Million Naira Sports Investment with Alive And Kicking Nigeria_

Alive And Kicking Nigeria, a pioneering ball manufacturing plant, has landed in Osun State, marking a significant milestone in the country's sports industry. The brain behind this project, Bob Olukoya PhD., revealed that the multi-million naira facility will produce a wide range of balls, including handballs, volleyballs, rugby balls, tennis balls, footballs, American footballs, and basketballs.

According to Dr. Olukoya, a UK trained Sports Administrator, the Osun State government has allocated a one-hectare land to the company at the Living Spring Free Trade Zone Ede. The necessary paperwork is being finalized, and production is set to commence without delay. This development is a testament to the state's investor-friendly policies, which have attracted Alive And Kicking Nigeria to Osun State.

The decision to partner with Osun State was not taken lightly. Over six states were considered, but Osun State's proactive approach and commitment to economic development made it the ideal choice. "We must produce what we consume," Dr. Olukoya emphasized, highlighting the government's policy. "That's what our company has brought to Osun State, and we believe our balls will satisfy the local market and beyond."

The impact of this project cannot be overstated. Nigeria currently spends $4 million annually importing balls from China and the Niger Republic, while the West African coast spends a staggering $14 million. Alive And Kicking Nigeria aims to bridge this gap by providing high-quality balls that meet FIFA/CAF standards. "We must show that we have the capacity to produce what we need and love our country and continent," Dr. Olukoya stressed.

The plant, which is currently operational in Kenya, is set to bring its expertise and technology to Nigeria. The company has highlighted key strategies to reach and satisfy the local market, including producing balls with different sizes and cutting-edge technology. "Our balls are tough, affordable, and durable on both green and brown surfaces," Dr. Olukoya boasted.

To test the quality of their products, Alive And Kicking Nigeria will be giving the first set of balls to clubs for free. This initiative will not only promote the company's products but also contribute to the development of sports in the state. "We believe in consuming what we produce," Dr. Olukoya reiterated. "The market is there; we just need to tap into it."

As the plant prepares to commence production, Dr. Olukoya emphasized the need for a producing economy rather than a consuming one. "When we start production, the raw materials needed to produce balls, such as rubber and leather, will experience a surge in demand," he noted. "This will have a positive impact on the economy and create new opportunities for our people." With Alive And Kicking Nigeria, Osun State is poised to become a hub for sports manufacturing in the country.

U20 World Cup: Flying Eagles To Battle Argentina After 1-1 Draw With Colombia

Seven-time African champions Nigeria put up an impressive performance against Colombia in the early hours of Monday to reach the Round of 16 of the ongoing FIFA U20 World Cup finals in Chile.

Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt made big saves in the 23rd and 26th minutes to keep the scoreline pristine in Talca, but the Flying Eagles were the more adventurous side as they hit the upright on a number of occasions, with Tahir Maigana, Kparobo Arierhi and Suleman Sani in full flow for large swatches of the encounter.

Colombia went ahead in the 51st when Kener Gonzalez swept the ball in off an assist by Neyser Villareal, but the Flying Eagles were undaunted and launched onslaught after onslaught against the South Americans at the Estadio Fiscal de Talca.

Defender Odinaka Okoro was denied by the goalkeeper as he headed the ball from a pull-out by Maigana in the 76th minute.

However, the two-time silver medallists got their breakthrough with four minutes left in regulation time, when captain Daniel Bameyi sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot after a shot by Maigana was handled in the box.

Nigeria came close to earning the winner in the 89th minute, but Arierhi’s shot was blocked in the box.

The draw sets up Nigeria against Argentina at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martinez Pradanos in Santiago on Wednesday, in what is a repeat of the quarter-final pairing of the last championship hosted by Argentina, which Nigeria won 2-0 in San Juan.

Colombia will confront another African side, South Africa, while Norway will take on Paraguay in the Round of 16.

SWAN's Demand For National Sports Commission Board Inauguration Gains Momentum

SWAN's Demand For National Sports Commission Board Inauguration Gains Momentum

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has urged the National Sports Commission (NSC) to immediately inaugurate its 17-member governing board.

Established in 1964, SWAN, the umbrella body for all Sports Editors, Reporters, Producers, and Presenters, warned that the Commission is operating in gross violation of its establishing law with the delay of a properly constituted NSC board.

SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, in a statement through Secretary-General Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, on Sunday, said the Commission has been functioning without a statutory board since its creation in October 2024, contrary to the NSC Establishment Act 2023.

“As a statutory board member of the NSC, I'm compelled to urge the Chairman and Director-General to take all necessary steps to inaugurate the board without further delay,” President Benjamin said.

“Operating without a duly constituted board for nearly a year is not only a breach of the law but also undermines transparency and accountability.”

He said Section 2(1) of the Act “is very clear” on the composition of the board, which includes representatives from ministries, sports bodies, the organised private sector, academia, medical field, military, persons with disabilities, the Nigeria Football Federation, the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria, and SWAN.

“There is no lawful way to run the National Sports Commission without a properly constituted board.

“All major decisions made since October 2024 lack legal backing in the absence of the board,” he added.

The SWAN President also linked the situation to a wider pattern of governance lapses in Nigerian sports, citing ongoing litigation involving the Nigeria Football Federation and controversies surrounding the Athletics Federation of Nigeria elections.

“The NSC cannot continue to function as a two-man entity – comprising only the Chairman and the Director-General – while 15 other constitutionally mandated positions remain unfilled.

“This issue will remain on the front burner until the law is obeyed,” he warned.

SWAN further lamented the neglect of the association in the scheme of operations, particularly in overseeing the engagement of experienced, qualified, and skilled Communication Managers to handle media operations of various sports federations.

According to President Benjamin, this would “complement the service of the NSC, enhance promotion, and boost the digital marketability of sports for sponsorship drives.”

He added, “Ignoring SWAN’s expertise in this regard is a missed opportunity to leverage professional sports journalism for national sports growth.”

SWAN also noted that a situation where National and International events are carried out unilaterally without necessary inputs by the  professional sports media body was unacceptable.

"One of the major reasons why President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his wisdom approved a National Sports Commission is to enable accelerated and holistic growth and development of Sports in Nigeria. What obtained in the past when sports was under Ministry or bureaucratic encumbrances is supposed to be a thing of the past with the emergence of NSC.

"A situation where unnecessary political/non-professional application or approach is deployed in the day-to-day operations of the Sports Commission is by far not the way to go," the statement said.

8th African Nations Championship: Eagles lose opening match 0-1 to title-holders Senegal

8th African Nations Championship: Eagles lose opening match 0-1 to title-holders Senegal

Cup-holders Senegal scored with their only shot on goal after a subtle onslaught that teased goalkeeper Lawal Mustapha out of his goalpost, and enabled the Senegalese strikers the opportunity to score the only goal of their African Nations Championship Group B clash in Zanzibar on Tuesday with 15 minutes left.

The high-octane encounter in the Indian Ocean Island lived up to its billing, with both teams matched strength-for-strength and pace-for-pace for large swathes of the game at the Amaan Stadium.

Goalkeeper Lawal Mustapha read quite well a good cross from the left in the 21st minute, and in the 33rd minute, the Lions of Teranga came close again from a free kick on the right.

Despite dominating possession, and throwing bodies manfully during attrition, the Eagles came just short of carving out clear opportunities, as the West African rivals defended with resolution.

Leonard Ngenge and captain Junior Nduka worked hard at the rear, just as Tochukwu Michael and Olamilekan Adedayo in the midfield, but Senegal threw several men at every Nigerian onslaught and denied the Eagles clear sight of goal.

With a minute left, the Cup-holders could have added another goal with a flowing team move, but Ngenge and Nduka were on hand to clear their lines.

Defeat means the Eagles occupy the bottom of group D without a point, following the earlier 1-1 draw between Congo and Sudan which meant the two teams shared the spoils.

Next up for Nigeria is their second match of the group phase, against Sudan, also at the Amaan Stadium, on Tuesday next week.

“This is really, really shocking,” NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, said in Abuja. “Peter Rufai dead? What happened? I am perplexed. We did not even know that he had been ill.

Nasarawa United may be on the verge of losing their highly respected goalkeeper's handler, Olatunji Baruwa MON. Top clubs in Rwanda have reportedly shown growing interest in securing his services. Baruwa's impressive track record, which includes stints as head coach at Osun United and goalkeeper's trainer for various Nigeria National Teams, has made him a coveted figure in the football world.

Baruwa's contribution to Nasarawa United has been invaluable. His expertise and tactics have significantly impacted the team's goalkeeping department. Last season, the club narrowly avoided relegation, and retaining Baruwa's services will be crucial to their future success. His ability to instill discipline and confidence in the goalkeepers has been a key factor in the team's performance.

While working with the senior national team, Baruwa brought stability and balance to the goalkeeping department, which had been plagued by crises. His presence helped to establish a sense of consistency and calm, allowing the team to perform at their best. It's no surprise that clubs have been making overtures to secure his services.

As the summer transfer window approaches, it remains to be seen whether Baruwa will switch employers. While interest from Rwanda clubs is significant, it's unclear if he will leave Nasarawa United. The club will undoubtedly face a tough challenge in retaining their esteemed goalkeeper's handler, but his departure would undoubtedly be a significant loss.

Osun SWAN Condoles Kano over Tragic Loss Of Athletes

Osun SWAN condoles Kano over tragic loss of athletes

With hearts heavy with grief, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun State Chapter, extends our deepest condolences to the Kano state government, Kano State Chapter of SWAN and the bereaved families over the tragic incident that occurred in Dakstalle, resulting in the painful loss of 19 irreplaceable lives, including athletes, journalists, medical personnel, and sports administrators. These individuals were patriotic sons and daughters of Nigeria, who had journeyed with noble intentions to represent their dear state at the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

This devastating event has cast a dark cloud not only over Kano State but also across the entire Nigerian sporting community. The loss of such vibrant and committed individuals—men and women who dedicated their lives to the growth and progress of sports in Nigeria—is a monumental tragedy that words alone cannot capture. We mourn alongside you, and our hearts weep with yours.

To the bereaved families, we say: we may not fully understand the depth of your sorrow, but we share in your pain. May Almighty Allah, in His infinite mercy, grant comfort to every grieving heart. May He forgive the shortcomings of the departed souls and admit them into Al-Jannatul Firdausi. Their contributions to the sports ecosystem, their passion, and their dedication will never be forgotten.

To our esteemed colleagues in SWAN Kano, please accept our heartfelt sympathy. This is indeed a moment of great sorrow for all of us as sports journalists and professionals. The loss of our comrades in the line of duty is not just a loss to Kano, but to the entire fraternity of sports journalism in Nigeria. We acknowledge and honour their sacrifice.

We also extend our thoughts and prayers to those who sustained injuries in the unfortunate crash. We pray for their swift and complete recovery, and for divine strength to continue in spite of this painful experience.

During this time of immense grief, we stand in unwavering solidarity with SWAN Kano and the Kano State Government. We call on relevant authorities to provide the needed support to the affected families and survivors, and to take steps to ensure the safety of our athletes, journalists, and officials in the future.

May the memories of the departed remain a blessing, and may we all find strength in unity and shared humanity as we walk through this valley of sorrow.

NLO Medical Tests: 44 Players Found Unfit

44 Players Fail NLO Medical Tests

No fewer than forty-four (44) players have been axed by the Nationwide League One (NLO), after a comprehensive medical check-up conducted by authorized doctors to ascertain their medical conditions and fitness levels found them wanting.

According to a statement from the media department of Africa's largest grassroot league, it was very important to conduct the medical examination test of players periodically in order to avoid sudden death.

According to the NLO Secretariat, the 44 players cut across 31 teams that were registered for the 2025 NLO season.

Offa Football Club tops the list with six (6) players, after the tests conducted by Doctor Ayo Olajide, Medical Consultant to the Nationwide League, confirmed a few hidden medical ailments.

Dr. Olajide also certified four (4) players of Camp Pro of FCT, Abuja unfit for the season on medical grounds.

Reacting to the development, NLO's Chief Operating Officer (COO) Olushola Ogunnowo: "A comprehensive medical check of players is a norm before the kickoff of every NLO season. Interestingly, 44 players won't be part of the 2025 season owing to their health conditions.

"The various test results have shown that some of the players were having issues of systemic hypertension or a medical condition.

"The affected players and their respective clubs have been officially notified, as they can not take part in the 2025 NLO season because of their health status, and the essence is to preserve their lives.

"With over 300 clubs cut across the NLO Division 1 and NLO U19, and thousands of grassroot football talents, this is why the medical tests are imperative for all the teams season in, season out."

Respect And Gratitude: Ololade Pays Homage To Late Col. Obi's Widow In Enugu

Osun United Chairman, Gbenga Ololade, paid a heartfelt visit to the widow of Late Col. Anthony Obi, the former military administrator of Osun State, at her residence in Enugu. The visit, which was unannounced, was a gesture of respect and homage to the late patriarch who had a lasting impact on the state's sports landscape.

Ololade, who was accompanied by the team's Media Manager, Seyi Akanni, extolled the virtues of the late military administrator, particularly highlighting his role in adopting the then Osun State's female team, 'FSP Obi Babes' which thereafter metamorphosized to Osun Babes, during their tenure.

The widow, who still misses her husband dearly, spoke glowingly of the cultures and traditions of Osun State, expressing pride in the state's athletes who have made and still making waves both locally and internationally. As a holder of a chieftaincy title from Ilesha, (Iya Fiwajoye), she appreciated the visit, which she described as a demonstration of respect for her late husband's legacy.

The conversation was filled with warmth and nostalgia, as they reminisced about the late Col. Obi's contributions to the state's development.

Ololade and Akanni concluded their visit by praying for Gods' guidance and long life for the widow. They expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to pay their respects and acknowledged the late Col. Obi's enduring impact on Osun State. The visit served as a testament to the late military administrator's lasting legacy, and Ololade's gesture was seen as a mark of respect for the man who played a significant role in shaping the state's sports history.
