OSF21 [Football Event]: Ilesa West, Orolu, Six Other LGs Rumble ln Quarter Finals

The last 8 teams to compete in the quarter finals of the ongoing 2021 Osun Sports Festival have emerged as zonal elimination round climaxed on Wednesday, September 29 across four venues in Osun State.

In Ila Orangun where Orolu, Ede North and Boripe lock horns in Group C, two first half goals by Adewale Omogboye and Ganiyu Kabir handed Boripe the deserved victory over Ede North and catapulted then to summit of the table with 4 points, same as Orolu FC who scored lesser goals. Ede North struggled to register a consolation late on to half the deficit but bowed out of the competition without a point.

In Okuku, Ilesha West came from a goal down to dump out Ife South  3-1 in the group B encounter. Gbamila Lekan's 33rd minute strike for Ife South was cancelled out by Folowo Lekan in the 55th minute before Offor Samuel and Adebiyi Oke sealed the victory in the 67th and 79th minutes. The results means Ilesa West topped the group with 6 points while Irewole LG finished distant second with 3 points. Ife South retired to 'the source' empty handed.

Ejigbo FC also picked the apex ticket of group D after a lone goal victory over Oriade. The only goal of the game was scored by Oseni Muideen in the 70th minute for Ejigbo to finish 6 points while Odo Otin picked the second group ticket with 3 points. Oriade bowed out pointless.

In group A, Ife East lost 1-2 to Ifelodun at Ilesha centre but they progressed to the knockout round with a solitary point. Two brilliant goals by Gotie Taofiq and Adebiyi Kamal in each half ensured that Ifelodun finished as table topper with the maximum 6 points while Isokan were relegated to Apomu.

The quarterfinals will take place on Friday, October 1, across the four centres.

OSF21: Orolu, lfelodun, Early Birds ln Quarter Finals, 10 LGs To Know Fate Today

*2021 OSF ZONAL ELIMINATION FOOTBALL EVENT: OROLU, IFELODUN SAIL THROUGH, ORIADE, ODO OTIN WALK ON A TIGHT ROPE*

Orolu and Ifelodun Local Governments  became the first two teams to reach quarter finals of the ongoing Osun Sports Festival as the four centres witnessed clash of titans in the match day 2 encounters on Tuesday, September 28, 2021.

Despite being held to a goalless draw by a hard-figting Boripe who has the woodwork to thank, "Benson's Boys" zoomed to the knockout stage with 4 points having defeated Ede North by a lone goal in their first Group C match. Orolu will be joined by winners in tomorrow's encounter between  Boripe and Ede North but a draw is enough for Boripe to gatecrash to the quarters.

Ifelodun, without kicking a ball in Group C's match day 2 game jumped into the knockout stage as Isokan and Ife East  battled for a coruscating 3-3 draw, for Isokan to manage a point in two games. The mouthwatering game saw Ife East take a sparkling lead of 2 goals in 2 minutes by Tomiwa Awojobi in 22nd and 23rd minutes before Sikiru Adeniran halved the deficit for Isokan upon resuming for the second half. Yusuf Jimoh added the 3rd for Ife East in the 57th minute but were denied victory as Isokan scored two late goals through Sikiru Adeniran and Azeez Sodiq in the 76th and 79th minutes. In the last game holding tomorrow at Ilesha Centre, a draw is enough for Ife East to progress while a loss by 3 goals or more will give Isokan a lifeline.

All eyes will be on Odo Otin Centre for the Group B last round matches coming up on Wednesday as all teams in the centre have mathematical chances of progressing to the next round. Irewole who won their first game massively against Ife South 4-1 were pegged back following a 0-2 loss to Ilesha West. Goals by Samuel Offor in each half put Irewole in a tight corner but a draw in tomorrow's game between Ife South and Ilesha West will be enough for both Irewole and Ilesha West to power through.

In group D, Odo Otin, who lost their first game to Ejigbo boosted their chances of making it to the quarter finals with a 2-0 win over Oriade following two first half goals by Afolabi Oluwaseun and Afolabi Joseph in the 16th and 32nd minutes. A draw or loss for Oriade at Ikire Centre tomorrow will give Ejigbo and Odo Otin the group's tickets.

Two teams from each group will progress to the quarter finals of the competition which will take place next week.

In a related result, Ifelodun LG continued their fine form from the first round as they hammered their Isokan LG opponents with 2 unreplied goals. The goals were scored by Gotie Taofiq in the 4th and 55th minutes.

Five Reasons To Look Forward To The 2021 Flying Officers Cup

^

.

Five Reasons To Look Forward To The 2021 Flying Officers Cup.

Since the tournament's inception in 2019, a number of big Nigerian Women Football clubs have participated.

In 2019, Edo Queens emerge winners after defeating Nasarawa Amazons in the final. Nasarawa Amazons lost in the 2020 final to eventual winners Bayelsa Queens by a lone goal.

This year's edition promises to be bigger and better, with sixteen teams fighting for honours, including three from neighboring African countries Benin Republic and Ghana.

Here are five Reasons why we should all look forward to the biggest women's football Pre-season Championship in Africa.

1. It's Something Different.

There has never been a Pre-season like this before, where teams from outside of Nigeria will be represented.

This would be an opportunity for teams to taste a different kind of football and opportunity away from norms. The atmosphere is expected to be something new.

2. Rivalries

One of Flying Officers Cup biggest selling points would be the passionate rivalries many teams in the tournament have with their opponents.

So many rivalries will be rekindled. From the local derbies to the African one.

Top teams like Rivers Angels, Bayelsa Queens, Nasarawa Amazons and FC Robo Queens may most likely meet up in the competition.

3. The Return Of Fans.

A handful of supporters will be allowed to come support their clubs. Recently, the Coronavirus epidemic ravaged the world, which made most matches played behind closed doors. With fans coming in and taking necessary precautions, it promises to be an electrifying environment at the Area 10 Sports Complex, Abuja.

4. Cracking Goals And Entertaining Style Of Play.

Look forward to strikes such as the sumptuous free-kick scored last year by Royal Queens midfielder Chioma Olise against Edo Queens or the stunner from about 30 yards scored by Naija Ratels midfielder Blessing Emmanuel to give her side the equalizer against Nasarawa Amazons in the Semi-final. We are expected to see even better goals this time around.

5. Underdogs Giving The Favourites A Run For Their Money.

If the 2020 edition of the Flying Officers Cup taught us anything, it was that nothing is ever certain in Football. Naija Ratels an underdog, went on to reach the Semi-final of the Flying Officers Cup, losing via penalties to Edo Queens and Nasarawa Amazons respectively in the third-place and semi's matches.

We might be seeing more surprises this year with teams from the NWFL Nationwide, Championship and Premiership all participating.

At a well attended press conference in the Federal Capital of Nigeria, Abuja, the former Super Eagles goal poacher was introduced to the press as Supremo of the Club by outgoing Chairman, Barrister Paul Edeh, who described Sule as a Sports administrator with  a wealth of experience.

The former AC Horsens of Denmark forward played professional football in Nigeria, Qatar, Denmark and Malaysia before quiting the round leather game in 2008 for business and Sports administration.

Sule spent four years working as Chairman at Kogi United and Confluence Queens, playing a key role in the development of the two teams and enjoyed a successful spell, leading both teams to the NWFL Premiership Super 4 in Lagos and the NNL Super 8 in Aba respectively.

An excited Abdul Sule, told newsmen on tuesday that he loves challenges, reason why he accepted to start a new role at Honey Badgers FC.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for me, because Honey Badgers have shown great progress since it was formed in 2019, promoting from the Nationwide to the Championship and I am convinced that the future will be better.

"I admire the way Barrister Paul Edeh is going with the team and no wonder they club keep improving year by year. We will continue to be ambitious and keep the legacy and policy of the team.

"We have big plans for the team and I think the players we have now are good enough to get us a promotion ticket to the Premiership, but above that, we want to build an environment where players from Benue and the northern part of the country can fulfill their dreams of playing abroad, and no doubt, we shall be giving them various opportunities to achieve that.

"We will try as much as possible to make the team better as we have started planning before now. We would be inviting some foreign coaches to come see the team at the Flying Officers Cup and that could be a step in a right direction.

He went on to further say: "Barrister Paul Edeh's willingness to see me join Honey Badgers was decisive and for me, the choice was natural, because I see great potential in the team and together we shall achieve greatness." He Concluded.

Also speaking at the Press Conference, Barrister Paul Edeh noted that the choice of Abdul Sule as Chairman of Honey Badgers FC was borne out of the fact that they both share the same vision to develop the game of football from the grasroot.

The Legal Luminary stated that he resigned as Chairman of the Makurdi based club and handed over to Sule, to put more concentration at Sports Development, through the Ratels Sports Development Foundation, an initiative which is getting bigger by the day.

"We believe that Abdul Sule will bring in his wide range of experience to play at the Badgers, secondly we noticed how he took Confluence Queens from their lowest moment to the peak before leaving.

"Working with him has shown that we share the same vision and passion for women's football. We don't believe in finished product, we build from the scratch and I think he is the right man for the job.

"Further more, his know-how in Football administration is topnotch, having played football to the highest level, both home and abroad are some of the main reasons leading us to present him our ambitious challenge.

"This appointment, is another sign of our ambition and desire to be as competitive as possible in the league, because truly, we have a lot of talents in Benue and the northern part of the country and we believe we can harness and nurture them to greatness through his appointment as Chairman. We want to congratulate him and wish him well in this new quest.

Honey Badgers is an NWFL Championship side, based in Makurdi, Benue State and was founded in 2019 alongside Naija Ratels by Barrister Paul Edeh, last year, they finished second in the NWFL Nationwide to gain automatic promotion to the Championship.

"It was well deserving of the teams as they capped their brilliant season and hard work with the much-needed ticket.

"The feat recorded by the clubs in Enugu has shown to our critics the value of the Ogunjobi Gold Cup to teams in their three tiers of our domestic league, as over the years the tourney Cup has grown to become a brand in Nigeria's  football, as it gives teams the needed platform to prepare for the new seasons.

"With the quality of football exhibited by these four teams at the NNL play-off, I'm certain these teams will make a difference in the NPFL this season.

"I want to appeal to the four teams that it's a different ball game in the NPFL and it's difficult to gain promotion and easy to relegate. So they must invest wisely in their squad, get their recruitment process right and strive to pick points on the road."

Shamsudeen, further hinted that plans were in top gear to organize the 9th edition of the Ogunjobi Gold Cup preseason tournament.

"I want to keep much of the information to my chest, though some states are bidding to host the prestigious championship, while more than 20 teams in the three tiers of our leagues have signified their interests of participation.

"It only shows quality, when teams like Rivers Angels, Bayelsa Queens, Nasarawa Amazons and the rest compete with Clubs from Ghana and Benin Republic in a Competition that isn't Organisers by WAFU or CAF. It clearly has to show the kind of dreams the Organisers have for Women's Football and special kudos should also go the the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) for providing an enabling environment for this kind of Competition."
