Nigeria's top rated Stand-up Comedian, Bowoto Jephthah Tanimola, popularly known as Akpororo on stage, has hailed the quality of the NLO Cup and top notch organization of the tournament by the Nationwide League One.

It was a hitch-free tourney as eight grassroot teams displayed the best of NLO brand of football to the delight of fans who trooped to the Uyo Township Stadium to catch a daily glimpse of the football moments in the NLO Cup, sponsored by telecommunications giant MTN and FirstCentral Credit Bureau.

At the end, a total of 35 goals were scored during the group phase in Uyo, with Palm Syrup qualifying to the final.

Akpororo, who owns and captains his team, Roro FC in the Nigerian 3rd division, couldn't spur his club beyond the Group phase of the NLO Cup, as they were knocked out of the competition at the Uyo Centre.

He led his team to a win, draws and loss. But despite the victory over Palm Syrup FC in their final group game, Roro FC failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition at the Uyo Centre.

"The NLO Cup has been cool tourney and another learning curve for RORO FC but I know with time, we will get to the level we have set for ourselves.

"Most importantly, I give credit to the NLO Secretariat for the initiative behind the NLO Cup, has we had some of the best teams in division in Kano and Uyo.

Osun Utd Secures 1-0 Win Against Stubborn Ilaji FC In A Friendly

Osun Utd decides to engage Nigeria Nationwide League One outfit Ilaji FC in a friendly, following the postponement of its Nigeria National League, Match Day One, against Gateway Utd., in a bid to get the lads busy for the season.

Abiola Sabitu started in goal while Afolabi Olatubosun and Abubakar Aminu paired at the back, Essien controls the middle as Rapheal Orngudwen lead upfront as countless fans thronged the stadium anticipating good football.

It's a close contest from the blast of the whistle as Omoluabi Giants dominate the proceedings early enough but fails to create chances as Ilaji FC defenders maintained a fine line at the back.

On resumption, following a goalless first half, Seye Ajayi rings some changes in a tactical substitution as Dayo Agbolade and Qozeem Raheem were called upon.
Ilaji lads were excellent once again at the back frustrating good move by the home side.

Deadlock broken thirteen minutes after resumption owing to much intent and pressures thrown at opponents. Kid sensation, Ismail Ayodele appears before his marker and was hacked, inside six yard following a through low drive that falls behind the line from Emmanuel Essien who dazzles brilliantly. Centre Referee made no mistake pointing to the spot as substitute, Dayo Agbolade stepped on to send Ilaji FC goalkeeper the wrong way.

The scoreline remains unchanged not untill Dayo Agbolade's tenacity saw him hitting the back of the net fifteen minutes from time, for second goal which was agonisingly ruled offside as he benefits from breakdown in communication via opponents back line. Ilaji lads despite going behind gave good account of themselves as centre referee ended the contest

Dayo Agbolade the goal scorer maintained that, his compatriots needs to understand themselves better upfront following series of moves being flanked offside, he's optimistic of more goals as the season kiskstarts.

NPFL: Rangers Late Strike Stop Sunshine In Akure

A late goal by a substitute, Jonas Emmanuel on two of the four added-on minutes of the 2023/2024 NPFL match day 8 fixtures, helped the ‘Flying Antelopes’, Rangers International F.C earn a share of the spoils as they forced the ‘Owena Whales’, Sunshine Stars F.C to a 2-2 draw in an encounter played at the Akure Sports Complex on Sunday.

Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu had stuck to the squad that defeated Heartland on the last match day. The boys did not disappoint the traveling delegation as former league top-scorer, Godwin Obaje nodded the Coal City side into an early lead as he connected home an Isaac Saviour well-taken free kick that resulted from the fouling of Kenneth Igboke on 4 minutes under pressure from lanky Ekerette Udom.

The goal silenced the half-full Akure Township stadium but sprung the coach Edith Agoye’s wards into action as they pushed for an early leveler that failed to materialize as the backline of the visitors ably anchored by the duo of Ifeanyi Onyebuchi and David Chimezie as Kazeem Ogunleye almost increased the lead for Rangers on 11 minutes but his pile-driver from about 25 meters missed target by few inches before Ibrahim Yusuf drew the home side level on 13 minutes after been left unmarked to blast an unstoppable shot past goalkeeper, Japhet Opubo as fans of the ‘Owena Whales’ found their voices again.

Both sides retired for the first half on even note and on resumption of the second stanza, the home side pushed for the winning goal as they dominated the middle of the pack but Ejike Ugochukwu, Chukwudi Nwaodu, Isaac Saviour, Joel Odoh, and Kenneth Igboke joined others to put up stiff resistance until the 81st minute when Moses Omodumueke’ teasing shot found its way past a badly positioned Opubo to put the home side in front heading into the last ten minutes as the fans went into wild in celebrations that were cut short with only two minutes remaining in the match when Isaac Saviour found Odoh Joel on the right who ran down with the ball to deliver an inch-perfect cross that was stylishly side-footed into the net by Jonas Emmanuel as goalkeeper Mustafa Lawal was caught napping as the visitor’s bench went into wild jubilations.

Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu said after the match, “It was a very difficult match against a quality side but as our slogan says, we never say die until the final whistle and I give my players kudos as we keep working on the areas of deficiency. My defense gave away cheap goals but we keep working until we get it right.”

With the win, Rangers maintain the third spot of the twenty-team log with 14 points from eight matches and will next play Katsina United on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the Awka City stadium.

"Their catchment area is within Ihitte-Uboma, though each club has the opportunity to register five (5) external players. The essence is for us to host the best tournament with a professional touch and play, as the plan is to show our matches via live stream on television and on our YouTube Channel and also to promote the unity and diversity of our people. In this modern time, football has proven to be the best platform to unify people regardless of race, tribe, or religion, and we thought it very interesting to get involved in this project.

"Some of the best players that will be discovered from the tournament will be recruited into Ave International Football Club for the 2024/2025 NLO season. Others will be scouted by some Nigerian Premier Football League clubs and our European partners. It will be an explosive tourney that will last for 10 or 12 days."

Speaking on his club's mission and vision for football. "I have a very strong passion for football and here at Ave International Football Club, we have a vision and mission for the beautiful game. Our vision is to become a very reputable club in Nigeria and Africa, and also a club that develops talents by giving them role care that each player requires, not players developing on their own.

"We currently have a senior team and a feeder team, our feeder team played in the final of the Nationwide League One/Ikukuoma Super Cup that was held a few months ago. Our teams are well-groomed and that is why it got to the final and lost on the lotteries of penalty."

Meanwhile, the organizers of the Ave/Ihitte-Uboma Super League have named a 10-man Local Organizing Committee (LOC) headed by key Ovuegbe as Chairman.

Other members are Patrick Chiwuike, Jude Uju, CC boy Anyalewechi, Goddy Ndudi, Saint John Okeke- Ave Director of Sports, Dee Chima Ibezim- President Supporters Club, Cheta Ojukwu- Ave Football Club Director of Social and Strategic Mobilization and Chinemerem Frank, while Ogechi Marcelina Obi will serve as Secretary.

House Committee On Sports Storms Osogbo Township Stadium Denounces Low Investments In Facilities

House Committee On Sports Storms Osogbo Township Stadium Denounces Low Investments In Facilities

Osun State House Of Assembly members saddled with sports developments this afternoon stormed Osogbo Township Stadium, in facilities tour assesments.

Led by the chairman of the committee, Hon. Jeremiah Awoyeye, the members were taken round the edifice by the General Manager of Sports Council, Rotimi Dunmoye in the company of personnels from sports ministry and sports council.

The committee who embarked on sports facilities tour said the aim is to bring to life the dying and moribund parts of the edifice with a view to giving face lifts to the facilities.

While addressing the pressmen after being conducted round the arena, Hon. Awoyeye frowns at the way the the stadium suffered neglect with zero investments by past administration.

"We have invited the ministry and sports council, after their briefings, we decided to come and see things ourselves. With what we see, a lot of things are out of place, I see no investment here in the past fifteen years, alot of our youths will go on to become stars, if we refuse to fix the facilities now, it won't be good for the state. It doesn't worth it calling this place the only stadium we have in Osun.

"We will also raise our voice and Mr. speaker will lead us to the governor to chat a way forward. Government has done a lot for the team and we believe the mandate of promotion given to the team handlers won't be achieved without good facility."

When quizzed about concerns of stakeholders following absence of necessary equipments that would aid the approval of the arena for the forthcoming league, the committee is optimistic of instant actions and informed that no cause for alarm.

"Work will start here latest tomorrow morning, we have been discussing before now, we only came here to ascertain some claims. We have met with commissioner for Sports and work has started, our team will play at home, even the new salary proposal for our players is on the table, it will be reviewed before the season kick-starts," revealed the eloquent, soft-spoken and energetic chairman of house committee on sports.

Recall that Nigeria National League has pegged October 28th for league resumption as Omoluabi Giants will be campaigning in Southern Conference 'B' in the abridged league format.

It was a spectacle to behold at the Uboma Secondary School Stadium Complex on Saturday, as both teams deserved their hands on the trophy, after the final game ended 1-1 in regulation time.

A minute after the half hour mark, Tudun Wada thought they had taken the lead from a sharp turn of pace by Yakubu Mohammed puts him in behind and did enough to fire his  shot towards goal from a tight angle, but his strike went for side netting.

Ave FC goalkeeper Sebastine Chibuike was forced to make a reflex save in the 35th minute, as he stretched magnificently to save a shot from Rabiu Abdullahi.

Former NNL Chairman and NFF Executive Committee Member, High Chief Emeka Inyama, has poured praises on the board of the Nationwide League One over the organization of the inagural NLO/ Ikukuoma Super Cup in Ihitte/Uboma.

The tournament hit its climax on Saturday with Tudun Wada and Ave FC set to spark fireworks at the final billed for the Uboma Secondary School Stadium complex.

Inyama while urging the NLO to remain consistent in its drive to rebrand Nigeria's football foundation said.

"I'm impressed with what I've seen, watched good football, seen talented young players and off course a wonderful facility. The matches have been fantastic for the level of football. This is how it should be, as football in Nigeria has to be foundational.

"I want to give credit to the Nationwide League One (NLO) for a top notch organization of the the U19 Youth League Super Cup. It's also interesting that all the matches played have been live streamed for the world to see the quality of third-tier league.

"Big kudos to the NLO Board, Chief Operating Officer, Olushola Ogunnowo and every staff that have added one or two inputs to the successful hosting of the NLO/ Ikukuoma Super Cup in Ihitte/Uboma. I think from here, the NLO should take it to the next level as step-by-step, our football will be back."

The former Abia Warriors boss who drove from Umuahia-Abia State to Ihitte/Uboma in Imo State to watch one of the second round matches, was amazed at the level of things on ground.

"I've been on a short break away from football, and just returned to the country from abroad, so I learnt of the tournament and off course decided to hit the road to Ihitte/Uboma.

"Don't forget that am into grassroot football as I founded one of the best football school in the country, this is the next level for them. My trip here too will avail me the chance to also learn one or two things from here, as learning never ends as its a continuous thing. So am impressed.

"Consistently over the years, the Nationwide League One management have done well. They have always set standards and raising the stakes as far as football at this level is concern.

"I must commend Ogunnowo for the brilliant job he and his team have done for the NLO, as they have made it the third-tier league a top football brand that Nigerians want to affiliate with. I just have one word for them, as that's, they shouldn't rest on their oars, as a lot is still expected."

Meet UK born Chris Nathaniel, Of Nigerian Parentage, Founders Of NVA Sports And Entertainment Agency, Which Manages Global Sporting Superstars And International Football Stars

Meet UK born Chris Nathaniel, Of Nigerian Parentage, Founders Of NVA Sports And Entertainment Agency, Which Manages Global Sporting Superstars And International Football Stars

Chris Nathaniel has for several years run one of the world’s leading sports talent and entertainment management agencies – his dream is to lead a Nigerian consortium to success with a Premier League team.

Based in London, United Kingdom, and operating throughout Europe and the world for some of the top names in sport, Chris reveals how it all started for him and his team and the interesting things they do for their clients.

Chris, proud of his Nigerian roots, said: "I've been in the Sports and Entertainment business for a long time.. I first started with Chelsea legend John Terry, then Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand when they were both at their peak, so two top England stars.

‘I also spent time looking after Wilfred Bonny (ex-Swansea who became the highest ever paid African player with his transfer to Manchester City), Steven Nzonzi (ex-Stoke City and World Cup winner with France in 2018), Brazilian midfielder Robinho and now Luis Diaz (Liverpool), and quite a few other players.

‘I also looked after other talents like Usain Bolt, and former WBC Heavyweight Boxing champion Deontay Wilder, so Sports and Entertainment is in my blood. On the music front, I have worked with hip-hop icons like Jay Z, P Diddy, 50 Cent, and other talents, like models and actors, so quite experienced across the whole Sports and Entertainment industry.’

Nathaniel led the first ever African consortium to bid for a Premier League club Newcastle in 2008, unfortunately the bid was not accepted by then owner Mike Ashley, who eventually sold out to the Arabs.

However, Nathaniel reveals he has unfinished business and has reached out to wealthy Nigerians including Dangote to launch another bid for a Premier league club. Nathaniel points to the recent valuation of clubs like Manchester United and Tottenham to highlight how Premier League clubs are great takeover targets – his knowledge of club values, structures and accessibility as takeover targets is second to none.

They are all profitable businesses and give tremendous Global presence and Nathaniel believes having a Nigerian owner of a top club will not only be profitable, but it will give Nigeria a greater global profile, enhancing the economy and encouraging tourism. The potential for booming business in Nigeria will then help with the general development of Nigerian football.

Chris believes football in Nigeria needs an overhaul from top to bottom very similar to what the English FA did after continued failures at major tournaments. In England this resulted in a change of fortune for the English national team, which is now challenging for trophies for the first time since winning the World Cup in 1966.

Nathaniel said: "We look after football players, we give them full support in coaching, mental health, support their passions, and everything you can imagine.

‘We take care of every angle for them, our job is to make sure they have long sustainable careers, make sure the right politics are played at their different football clubs, and make sure they get the best out of themselves to become the best they can be.

‘Our job is forever widening as agents, not about doing the move but a whole lot, so we are like a mini football club as an agency. Our job is to maximize every possible area for our clients.’

Nathaniel whose agency has dominated the sports talent market in Europe and across the globe for a long time explains how challenging scouting is, the transfer market and managing players. Chris tells how he rates Nigerian players, has a thorough understanding of football back in Nigeria, and explains why African players so sort after by top clubs.

Chris added: "The scouting system is getting better and better as we've been able to see what's on the ground in Nigeria, by having key people on the ground give you information. In the Premier League more and more people know that the best players are coming from Africa, so there is a lot more focus now as far as recruitment is concerned of African players.

"Nigerian players, I rate very highly, as they are powerful, strong, and skillful, and if you look at most of the leagues across Europe, they do feature lots of Nigerian players. This is because they do have that natural physicality, and that is going to increase as the years move on, we are going to get more and more Nigerian players in Europe. I won't be surprised to see teams full of a squad of African players. More and more, they are dominating the football and player recruitment side of things.

"I do have some understanding of Nigerian football, I’ve spent time with club owners from the NLO (Nationwide League One) and the Chief Operating Officer Shola Ogunnowo. When they visited the UK on a few occasions, which (NVA Sports & Entertainment Group) helped facilitate. I got the understanding of how football is from the grassroots up, the infrastructure, the challenges they face, and what we are trying to do, which is to create a partnership to make those challenges a bit easier.

‘I'm always keen to work with exceptional talent so clubs, scouts, parents, or players can reach out to us here at NVA as we are on all social channels and a quick Google search will give you our details. We are prepared to listen and are keen to assist in nurturing talent to achieving their full potential."

The NVA Sports & Entertainment Group boss gave his candid opinion on why the likes of Taiwo Awoniyi and a few African players found it difficult to hit the ground running at Liverpool, but revealed that there are many players of Nigerian descent in the football academies at Merseyside.

Chris said: "Well, it's tough because when you are at the top end of football, you need to be of a very high standard. Sometimes it takes African players time to develop and get accustomed to Premier League football.

‘Sometimes it can be difficult, but Sadio Mane has shown that African players can certainly do well at Liverpool and I think there will be more and more African players that will come through and do well. Don't forget Mo Salah is an African player doing very well with Liverpool, so that trend is ever expanding.

‘Liverpool, in particular, has a rich history with Nigerians. After the war there were a lot of mixed-race relationships in Liverpool, involving Nigerian men and Liverpudlian women. You will find lots of players in the academies – both of Liverpool and Everton - of Nigerian descent that are of mixed race heritage (Nigerian fathers and English mothers). The Nigerian community on Merseyside big and there are lots of Nigerian restaurants around.’

Nathaniel gave his thoughts on why talented Nigerian-born players like Bukayo Saka, and Eberechi Eze opted to play for England instead of Nigeria.

Chris explained: "The basic benefit is players find it easy, as it's more organized playing for England. There are lots of stories and rumours about how disorganized things are with the national team in Nigeria, so obviously, these players pick up on these rumours.

‘Sometimes they're false or over-fabricated, but a player hears that, and he says, to himself, ‘I’ve got to be the best I can be, I don’t want those distractions, you know what I don't want to go through that.’

‘Secondly, they feel they get more profile for playing for the English national team and that’s why we need to change that narrative to assist Nigerian football moving forward – this is a challenge, but I believe it is doable.’

We also have to accept the players are UK born so they may decide that’s their home and therefore want to represent the country of their birth.

Nathaniel whose agency manages lots of players, like Luis Diaz of Liverpool, talked about how he came to work with the Colombian, his network and why Nigerian players despite their talents don't command the right transfer fees, and why Napoli striker Victor Osimhen can break the barrier.

Nathaniel added: "What happened then, Luis Diaz was a player I thought was very good. I have seen him play in Portugal, and I thought he will be a good one for us to work with. I combined with a Portuguese agent based in Portugal and his original Colombian agent. I am based in England, so the collaboration was perfect, as I have fantastic access with key stake holders in football and in the commercial area, so we decided to work together to benefit Luis' career. We plan to build him into a global brand, but these things take time and continued success on the pitch.

"I have a vast network, we have players that play for Sheffield United, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City, and we have some players playing abroad as well. So our network is wide-ranging across Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East, so we are in every major league. We have worldwide connections with coaches, and managers, all across the board as we are an agency that is very well networked out.

"Managing players is tough as you have to put the hours in; it's so much like your whole life goes into it, trying to look after their careers. Sometimes it's a thankless task, they don't appreciate the work you put in, but some do and you are only judged as good as the player you represent, so it's a tough business as some unscrupulous agents want to take your player – we’ve encountered lies and deceit, but transparency is important and players need to be able to trust their representative.

‘It's a very tough terrain, at the outset for the players and their families, but it's also massively satisfying if you see your player become successful, win trophies, and have a successful, sustainable life after football. Some players come from extremes of poverty and to enable them and their loved ones to live a comfortable life after the game is so rewarding. When that happens you know you've done your job and that is the satisfying part of it all.

"I think sometimes when these talented Nigerian and other African players come to Europe, they lose their hunger and this happens with players Globally they get big deals, and salaries, so the hunger gets lost and they no longer push themselves to get to the next level. There's no doubt the talent is there, it's just about having that mental discipline to keep aspiring to be the best and keep pushing yourself to the higher limits.

‘Sometimes that's down to guidance, to the individual, hopefully, Victor Osimhen can be someone that changes that narrative, a lot of Nigerian players will aspire to be big as him or even bigger. It’s about the mindset – they can only play for a short number of years, compared to their lifespan, so focussing on getting the maximum out of that short period and putting all distractions to one side and seeing the bigger picture is so important. At NVA we are all about that bigger picture – we want all our players to grow to be the best they can be.’

Finally, Nathaniel while commenting on Nigeria's level of football, spotted areas that need urgent attention and how grassroots football can meet up with the new trends.

Chris said: "Everyone has to be on the same page for starters, that is having a collective plan.

It's long overdue, because Nigerian football has underperformed on the international stage.

When you look at the Nigerian team from 1994, which almost got to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, how has the nation declined since then.

‘It is clear to many people,  that there is no planning, no shared focus and if you don't plan, you are going to have failure. They need to have a rethink, this should be the goal for the next five years for Nigerian football to achieve XYZ, get all the key stakeholders together and put a clear accountable plan in place, and make that happen and if they fail a new team are put in place it’s a results business and that needs to be implemented at the highest level of Nigerian football no more jobs for the boys. Otherwise, they are going to be having the same results and continued failure. Nigerian players have enormous potential, but very little is being realized. So things have to change now - today not tomorrow not next year, not in five years!!

‘Presently, I don't think that there are enough structures in some of the football academies and clubs. The funding, as it's really important, means any player that comes out of Nigeria, should get good deals, so that a sizeable amount of money goes back to the academy structure.

‘They can then build from the grassroots and make it better. I think there are a few academies already that are doing that, like Mavlon FC, so we just need more and more deals that include the academies. That will raise the standards, which are key to developing football in Nigeria from the ground up.

‘Due to my Nigerian heritage, I dearly want to help the Nigerian academies by using my global network to create partnerships with European clubs, which will involve trials, player development, exchange of coaching knowledge and structural set ups and funding.

‘We all have to come together and make tomorrow brighter….we can then all cheer on this great nation when the Super Eagles get litty again.’
