Glasgow 2026: Nathaniel Strikes 400mH Gold, Onwuzurike Sprints to 200m Silver, as Team Nigeria Ends Day 8 on a High

Team Nigeria wrapped up an outstanding Day 8 at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with another gold and silver medal, as Ezekiel Nathaniel was crowned Commonwealth champion in the men's 400m hurdles while Udodi Onwuzurike produced a sensational performance to claim silver in the men's 200m on Friday night.

The latest podium finishes further strengthened Nigeria's impressive medal haul and capped another memorable day of competition.

The standout performance of the evening came from Ezekiel Nathaniel, who delivered a commanding display to win the men's 400m hurdles gold medal in 48.47 seconds. Nathaniel controlled the race from the opening stages before powering clear to finish ahead of England's Jake Minshull, who claimed silver in 48.99 seconds, while Jamaica's Assinie Wilson took bronze in 49.22 seconds.

Nathaniel's victory represents a remarkable rise on the Commonwealth stage after finishing sixth at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Four years later, the Nigerian returned stronger, faster and more determined to stand atop the podium as Commonwealth champion.

Nigeria's sprint success continued in the men's 200m final, where Udodi Onwuzurike, running from the outside lane eight, produced one of the performances of the championships. The Nigerian clocked a season's best of 20.09 seconds (+1.7) to win the silver medal, finishing behind South Africa's Sinesipho Dambile, who secured gold in 19.96 seconds.

Earlier in the day, Jami Schlueter concluded a memorable Commonwealth Games debut in the men's decathlon, finishing seventh overall with 7,665 points across the ten events. Schlueter impressed throughout the competition, sitting fourth after the opening day and remaining among the leading contenders through six events before ultimately securing a commendable top-seven finish in one of the Games' most demanding disciplines.

Nigeria’s tally moves to 9 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze, for a total of 18 medals.

Team Nigeria heads into the closing stages of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with renewed confidence, growing momentum and determination to continue flying the nation's flag high.

NFF Elective Congress now to hold September 27

This year’s Elective Congress of the Nigeria Football Federation, earlier scheduled for Saturday, 26th September in Lafia, capital city of Nasarawa State, has now been moved by 24 hours.

The Elective Congress, which will usher in members into the Executive Committee of the NFF for the next four years, will now take place in the same city on Sunday, 27th September.

At an extraordinary general assembly of the NFF held virtually on Wednesday, President of NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau MON, explained that the request for date-change was necessitated by the date given for the Super Eagles’ opening qualifying match for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, against Madagascar’s Barea.

Following interactions with the Confederation of African Football, the date agreed for the match is Friday, 25th September 2026. Obviously, it will be highly impossible for a number of candidates in the election, who will be at the match, to make it to Lafia the following morning in time for the Elective Congress.

Gusau added that it was on the need to consider this situation that the NFF Executive Committee called for the extraordinary general assembly, to put forward a proposal for the Elective Congress to now take place in Lafia, Nasarawa State on Sunday, 27th September 2026.

A member of the Congress moved a motion in line with the proposal, and it was immediately seconded, putting a seal on the new date.

14th WAFCON: Malawi’s Scorchers Edge Super Falcons In Five-goal Thriller

14th WAFCON: Malawi’s Scorchers Edge Super Falcons In Five-goal Thriller

Debutants Malawi produced one of the biggest shocks in the history of women football in Africa when they defeated 10-time champions Nigeria 3-2 in Rabat’s Al Madina Stadium on Tuesday night.

Despite dominating early on and creating several scoring opportunities, the Super Falcons were unable to break the deadlock in a goalless first half.  The match exploded into life in the final twenty minutes. Malawi took the lead in the 73rd minute through Temwa Chawinga, before her sister, Tabitha Chawinga, doubled the advantage six minutes later.

Skipper Rasheedat Ajibade gave Nigeria hope in the 90th minute by converting a penalty, but Temwa Chawinga struck again deep in stoppage time (90+6’) to restore Malawi’s two-goal cushion.

A goal nine minutes into added time, assisted by a headed ball on the right, by substitute Uchenna Kanu brought the scoreline to 3-2, but time ran out for the Cup-holders to complete the comeback.

With Barbara Banda-led Zambia pumping six goals past Egypt in the opening match of Group C also on Tuesday, the Super Falcons will immediately turn their attention to their second Group C fixture against the rampant Zambians on Saturday, where maximum points will be essential to put their qualification drive back on track.

Super Falcons Stand United: NFF Condemns Racist Abuse Directed At Esther Okoronkwo Ahead Of WAFCON Opener

Oluchi Tobex Tobe-Chukwu

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has issued a stern statement strongly condemning the "unacceptable racist abuse" directed at Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo on social media.

The disturbing online attacks occurred in the wake of a recent incident at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, Morocco, which served as the national team's pre-WAFCON training camp. The squad spent 10 days at the facility before moving to Rabat, where they will play their three group matches.

In its official release, the NFF provided definitive clarity on the hotel situation that preceded the online harassment. The federation confirmed that the individual responsible for a theft at the team's camp was swiftly apprehended by authorities. Justice was served promptly, with the perpetrator made to return the stolen cash in full before being sentenced to six months in prison.

Given the swift legal resolution of the crime, the NFF expressed absolute bewilderment and outrage at the unwarranted backlash against their forward.

"The racist abuse and emojis directed at our player make absolutely no sense," the NFF stated, firmly reiterating that "discrimination in any form has no place in football or society". The governing body underscored that the safety, dignity, and overall well-being of its players remain its utmost priority.

Despite the unsettling off-field distraction, the morale within the Nigerian camp appears unbreakable. The NFF assured supporters that the entire Super Falcons squad stands united and is completely unbothered by the external noise.

With the legal matter firmly handled, the reigning African queens remain fully focused on the task at hand , Tuesday's opener against Malawi.

Adeleke’s Commissioner Urges President Tinubu To Ensure Free, Fair Election In Osun Ahead Of August 15 Poll

Adeleke’s Commissioner Urges President Tinubu To Ensure Free, Fair Election In Osun Ahead Of August 15 Poll

The Osun State Commissioner for Political Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations, Hon. Biyi Odunlade, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and guarantee a free, fair and credible governorship election in Osun State on August 15.

Odunlade made the appeal on Wednesday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Guest Platform in Osogbo, where he alleged that deliberate efforts were being made to intimidate voters and undermine democracy in the state.

According to him, the lingering crisis in the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, is being “orchestrated and programmed” to create fear and suppress voter turnout.

“The crisis in the NURTW is orchestrated. It is organised to hijack power from the sitting government by creating fear and instability. The aim is to intimidate voters and create an atmosphere where people will be afraid to come out and vote,” he alleged.

The commissioner claimed some political actors plan to “start from the markets” on election day because “market women are easily frightened.”

“I asked an APC member what their strategy was. He told me once they hear gunshots, ordinary voters who have no political affiliation will stay away from polling units. That is dangerous for democracy,” Odunlade said.

He also faulted the alleged non-neutrality of federal security agencies in the state.

“There is hardly any security committee meeting that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, attends personally. He always sends representatives. At a time when security is critical, especially ahead of an election, that should not be the case,” he added.

Odunlade further accused the Federal Government of double standards in handling local government allocations, citing President Tinubu’s past legal battle for Lagos when he was governor.

“When President Tinubu was Governor of Lagos State, he went to court over withheld allocations and eventually got justice. Today, Osun State’s allocation has been withheld, yet the same sympathy is not extended to the state. We are asking for consistency and fairness,” he said.

The commissioner urged the President to allow Osun people to decide their next governor without external interference.

Super Falcons Star Says WAFCON Expansion Won’t Change Nigeria’s Title Ambition

Super Falcons Star Says WAFCON Expansion Won’t Change Nigeria’s Title Ambition

Super Falcons’ ace forward Rinsola Babajide believes that the increase in the number of participating teams at this year’s Women Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco will only make the tournament more exciting.

Ahead of the final tournament scheduled for Morocco 26th July – 16th August, the Italian Serie A Femminile champion with AS Roma told thenff.com that the competition transmuting from a 12-nation to a 16-nation-finals does not make much difference, as the motivation to triumph remains the same for the Cup holders.

“I think it makes it more exciting. We all know that this year’s Women AFCON is also for qualification to the World Cup finals. Of course, we all want to be there. I think it will make it more competitive but for us, the goal remains the same.

“For us as a team, whether we are playing just to be crowned champions of Africa or for qualification to next year’s World Cup, the pressure is the same as we want to win. The only pressure actually is the one we put on ourselves. We know what we signed up for as professionals and being the defending champions, we want to retain our trophy.”

The exciting forward, who was part of the squad that reclaimed the Women AFCON title for Nigeria in Morocco last year, looked back at her earlier years and credited her development as a complete player to the excellent foundation she got in England and the resilience she has learnt with Nigeria.

“I’ve been blessed to have the best of two worlds. England helped me develop my game from age-grade football; I am forever grateful for that. I have continued to grow as an experienced player with Nigeria and I do not take this for granted. I have learnt resilience and professionalism in both environments and these make me a better player and a better person. We know what it takes to win and as a team, we will give it our all in Morocco to retain the trophy. We are all determined to make Nigeria proud in Morocco.”

Depot Nigerian Army Osogbo Denies Rape Allegations, Seeks Evidence From Public

The Headquarters, Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, has called for victims and eyewitnesses to present verifiable evidence as it continues to investigate allegations of misconduct involving some recently passed-out personnel.

In a press statement signed by Major Ibrahim Yahaya, Assistant Director Army Public Relations, on July 3, 2026, the Command said it remains committed to a “thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation” into all allegations of unprofessional conduct following its initial release of June 30, 2026.

The statement addressed rape allegations recently attributed to the Vice Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, and amplified on social media platforms.

According to the Army, it has not received “any formal complaint, medical report, or credible evidence from any alleged victim, witness, or the University Management to substantiate the claim of rape by our personnel.”

“In the absence of such concrete evidence, we view the widespread circulation of this specific allegation as unconfirmed and potentially misleading to the public,” the statement read.

Depot Nigerian Army Osogbo has constituted a Board of Inquiry which it says “will leave no stone unturned.” The Command appealed directly to any alleged victim(s) of assault or sexual misconduct, and any eyewitness(es) with videos, photographs, medical records, or statements, to come forward.

“You are kindly requested to come forward and present your evidence directly and confidentially to the Board of Inquiry at the Headquarters, Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, or through the Army Public Relations Office,” the statement said.

It assured that “Your identity and safety will be protected in line with military and legal procedures,” adding that this is “the only credible path to identifying and prosecuting the culprits if they exist.”

The Army urged the Media, NANS, University Management, and the public to avoid spreading unverified information.

“Sensationalism and disinformation only hinder the search for truth and can cause unnecessary panic among students and host communities,” Major Yahaya said.

The Command also reiterated that the Nigerian Army “does not condone indiscipline” and that any personnel found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other extant laws.

Depot Nigerian Army Osogbo further restated its commitment to civil-military cooperation, the protection of students, and the upholding of human rights, promising to update the public as the investigation progresses.

Super Eagles Ex-GK Trainer Baruwa Top Of NPFL Shopping List

Super Eagles Ex-GK Trainer Baruwa Top Of NPFL Shopping List

Clubs in the NPFL are jostling for the signature of immediate past Super Eagles Goalkeeper’s Trainer, Olatunji Baruwa MON, the proven fixer is currently with Nasarawa United, where he’d worked under senior coaches like Coach Adams, Coach Kabiru Dogo, and Coach Salisu Yusuf to restore real balance in the goalkeeping department.

His resume reads like a national team roll call, Future Eagles, Golden Eaglets, Flying Eagles, and the Super Eagles. When a man with that CV is available, the market moves.

Nasarawa United are struggling to keep Baruwa against next season, and the tempo is real because the club is looking to regroup from July 14. They narrowly missed out on a continental slot last season, and keeping a coach of Baruwa’s calibre is key to pushing over that line. For the Solid Miners, losing him would feel like taking a step back just as they are ready to take two forward.

Meanwhile, the plot thickens in Minna. Following the dissolution of the management and Technical Crew of NPFL side Nigeria Tornadoes FC, Baruwa may find it tempting to say goodbye to Lafia. A clean slate, a big rebuilding job, and his national team pedigree could make Tornadoes an attractive project. In the same vein, two other NPFL heavyweights are testing Nasarawa United’s resolve. They see what Baruwa did with the keepers’ unit and want that same structure and discipline in their own dressing room.

It’s going to be interesting days ahead. The Osogbo-born CAF B license holder has even done a stint as head coach at then Nigeria National League side Osun United, so he’s not afraid of responsibility. Will he stay and finish what he started in Lafia, or will the pull of a new challenge win out? Whoever lands Baruwa MON will not just be signing a goalkeeper trainer; they’ll be signing a culture and game changer. Interesting days ahead while transfer window lasts.
