Chelle: My Boys Have A Winning Culture, Penalties Won’t Scare Us

Chelle: My Boys Have A Winning Culture, Penalties Won’t Scare Us

Nigeria’s Head Coach Eric Chelle says his team is prepared to retain the Unity Cup Tournament trophy in Saturday’s final in London no matter which circumstances present themselves on the day.

The Super Eagles and the Reggae Boyz won their semi final encounters against Zimbabwe and India respectively by two unreplied goals, and face off for the third time in the history of the Afro-Caribbean mini-tournament that celebrates football, music and culture in the British capital.

Last year, Moses Simon gave Nigeria an early lead, with the Reggae Boyz replying almost immediately through Kaheim Dixon. Early in the second half, Nigeria regained their lead at the Brentford Stadium through Samuel Chukwueze, but the Boyz found the leveller again, through Jon Russell.

The three-time African champions netted their five penalty kicks while Dwayne Atkinson blew his kick above goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s sticks.

Though Simon and Chukwueze are not at this year’s tournament, Nigeria showed class with a largely new group on Tuesday, outclassing Zimbabwe’s Warriors with a brace from debutant Femi Azeez. The following day, Kaheim Dixon scored the second for the Boyz against India, after Courtney Clarke had put them ahead.

Asked whether his team is prepared to go through the penalty shootout ritual again – having won last year’s tournament through that route and being subjected to the lottery in the semi-final and third-place match at the last Africa Cup of Nations finals - Chelle said: “Penalties are part of the game, and it can decide who wins a match. Every time I go into a game, I have the mentality to win.

“This is the culture I have put in these boys – the winning culture. I don’t know if Saturday’s game will end in penalties; what I know is that I have prepared my team to win. These are very young players with a bright future and they are hungry for success at any level. So, on Saturday, we will see how the game is decided, but we surely have prepared to win and defend the Unity Cup.”

Kingsley Awodi Welcomes Nigeria’s Para-Powerlifting Team After Algeria Championship Success

Kingsley Awodi Welcomes Nigeria’s Para-Powerlifting Team After Algeria Championship Success

Fresh from the 2026 African Open Para-Powerlifting Championship in Algeria, Nigeria’s para-powerlifting team returned not just with luggage, but with 49 medals and a story of grit that had already begun to ripple across the country.

Leading the welcome was Kingsley Awodi, a philanthropist who has quietly backed Nigerian sports for years. Recall that he re-grassed the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja under Sunday Dare, restoring one of the country’s key sporting venues for athletes and fans.

Awodi is also a major stakeholder in the sports industry. In the past, he single-handedly paid athletes’ grants to ensure competitors could focus on training and competition without financial strain. His support has remained consistent and practical: in April, he hosted and sponsored the Kingsley Awodi Para-Powerlifting Championship in Abuja, providing the team with competitive exposure just weeks before their departure for Algeria. That same commitment was evident again at their homecoming.

Addressing the athletes, coaches, and officials gathered in the arrival hall, Awodi opened by framing their achievement within the larger narrative of Nigerian resilience and excellence on the continental stage:

“I am deeply honoured to welcome home our victorious Nigeria Para-Powerlifting Team from the 2026 African Open Para-Powerlifting Championship in Algeria. You have once again shown the world the strength, resilience, discipline, and fighting spirit that Nigerians are known for.”

For four days in Oran, Nigeria’s lifters competed against Africa’s best and returned with 32 gold, 12 silver, and 5 bronze medals. The result secured second place overall behind Egypt and reinforced Nigeria’s standing as a powerhouse in para sports. Beyond the medal count, it was the composure and precision of their performances that drew widespread praise.

Recognizing the collective effort behind the success, Awodi acknowledged the pride and honor the team had brought to the nation:

“Your performances have brought pride, joy, and honour to our nation, and I celebrate every athlete, coach, and official who contributed to this remarkable success.”

He then turned to the responsibility of sustaining such progress, commending the leadership of the National Sports Commission while emphasizing the need for broader private sector involvement:

“While I sincerely appreciate the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their work in repositioning sports in Nigeria, government efforts alone cannot carry the weight. This is the moment for the private sector to step forward and actively support our athletes and sporting institutions.”

To match words with action ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Awodi announced immediate cash rewards for medal winners:

“Every gold medalist will receive ₦1.5 million, every silver medalist ₦1 million, and every bronze medalist ₦500,000. This is not merely about financial rewards, but about recognizing sacrifice, hard work, and the courage to represent Nigeria with pride.”

As the team posed for photos with medals around their necks, the message was clear. The performance in Oran was about more than weight on a bar, it was about raising the standard for Nigerian sports and showing what becomes possible when athletes are consistently backed.

A Fitting Tribute: Muda Lawal Stadium Set For World-Class Revamp

A Fitting Tribute: Muda Lawal Stadium Set For World-Class Revamp

The Federal Government, through the National Sports Commission (NSC), has approved the revamping of the Muda Lawal Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State, in honour of one of Nigeria’s greatest football legends, Mudashiru Babatunde Lawal.

The rebirth of the historic stadium is part of the Federal Government’s broader commitment under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to upgrade sports infrastructure across the country and create world-class facilities capable of driving grassroots and elite sports development.

Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, described the project as a “fitting recognition for a true Nigerian sporting icon whose legacy continues to inspire generations of athletes across the country.”

“Muda Lawal remains one of the finest footballers ever produced by Nigeria and deserves to be immortalized through a modern sporting facility that will serve not only Ogun State but the entire nation,” the DG said.

He added that the revamp of the stadium will significantly boost football and other sporting activities in the region, especially at a time when sports participation and youth engagement continue to grow rapidly across the country.

The renovation project will include the installation of new tartan tracks and the rehabilitation of major facilities within the stadium to meet modern standards. The upgraded complex is expected to become a hub for sports and national competitions.

Muda Lawal, who hailed from Abeokuta, Ogun State, remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated football heroes. The former Green Eagles player was a central figure in Nigeria’s historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, where he scored in the memorable 3-0 victory over Algeria to secure the country’s first-ever continental title. He was also instrumental in IICC Shooting Stars’ success as the club won Nigeria’s first continental club trophy, the African Cup Winners Cup, in 1976.

Part of the Federal Government’s commitment to sports infrastructure development nationwide, the next three host states of the National Sports Festival are set to receive strategic support and facility upgrades.

Enugu State, which is the next immediate host of the National Sports Festival, will benefit from the construction of an Olympic-size swimming pool, upgrade of its indoor sports hall, rehabilitation of athletes’ hostels and several other intervention projects aimed at ensuring a successful hosting of the Games and long-term sporting development in the state.

The National Sports Commission reaffirmed that these interventions align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places strong emphasis on youth empowerment, infrastructure renewal and the use of sports as a tool for national development, unity and economic growth.

At a special prayer session held for Oyo State pilgrims at Diyar Al Shaab Mosque in the holy city of Mecca on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, where hundreds of pilgrims gathered to seek divine intervention for peace and security in the country, the cleric noted that it is high time strong actions were taken against the increasing attacks on schools and abduction of students.

Amateur League Scandal: Cynosure FC Guilty Of Misleading NLO

Cynosure FC of Abakaliki has been penalised for a second consecutive season by the Nationwide League One (NLO). Its crime, two violations: illegally playing a professional player in an amateur league and submitting false registration information.

The NLO Secretariat states that Cynosure FC used Nigeria National League players in several matches this season, violating NLO rules on Player Eligibility and Amateur Status (Articles 3:01, (5), 3:01, (8), 3:01, (11), 3:01(13), and Article 9:02).

The players involved are Orngudwem Raphael from Solution FC (NNL/2025/2026/SFC/030, until 30/08/2026) and Ogbodo Valentine Chizoba from Osun Utd FC (NNL/2025/2026/OUF/052, until 02/02/2027). Notably, Chizoba was declared AWOL (Absent Without Leave) by Osun Utd management.

Cynosure FC reportedly submitted knowingly false declarations and forged or misleading documents, claiming the player was an amateur, thereby deceiving the NLO during registration. These violations were discovered through routine verification by the NLO Secretariat.

The Disciplinary Committee met on 19th May 2026. The Club was notified and attended, with the Chairman admitting the information was genuine but claiming ignorance of the illegalities regarding fielding a professional player in an amateur match without a 30-day hiatus, as per FIFA rules.

Despite being informed, the Chairman, Mr. Nwaeze Chidiebere Prince, said he wasn't told that loaning an amateur is illegal, which also breaches transfer rules. The Committee found the defence unpersuasive, noting deliberate actions that risked undermining the amateur league.

NFF Seeks Closer Collaboration With Chinese Football Association

NFF Seeks Closer Collaboration With Chinese Football Association

The Nigeria Football Federation has taken the step to forge a closer relationship and meaningful ties with the Chinese Football Association, following a meeting between the NFF leadership and the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Yu Dunhai, in Abuja on Thursday.

President of NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, MON reiterated that football is an immensely powerful tool to solidify relationships among nations and entities, and assured the top diplomat that the NFF is eager for closer ties with Chinese football, especially in the women’s category where China is a global force.

“We have received an offer from certain persons who are close to the Chinese FA, and who want our U17 girls to participate in a mini-tournament in China in July. We believe that this will be the beginning of a great working relationship with Chinese football.

“We are looking at more regular games among our teams. Certainly, matches can be organized both in China and Nigeria for both nations to participate, and at all times, the NFF will always intimate the Chinese Embassy and seek its guidance and advice.”

His Excellency Yu Dunhai, who is into the second year of his tenure in Nigeria, praised Gusau for the great interest in Chinese football and said there is a lot of collaboration and exchange programmes taking place between both nations in other sectors presently.

“As you said, football is a very strong instrument for forging unity because it belongs to the youth, and the youth represent the future. Presently, there are many Nigerian players and coaches in the Chinese League, and I am always thrilled to realise that Nigeria and China share the same Independence Day – October 1.

“Actually, my first knowledge of Nigeria came through football – when your boys won the Olympic football gold in Atlanta in 1996. Twelve years later, they won the silver medal right in China. Your U17 boys are also very strong and have the greatest collection of titles in the FIFA World Cup. Incidentally, their first title was in China in 1985.

“Football needs no language. Although our men’s team is not that strong, we are better in the women’s game and our people do enjoy watching the game.”

At the occasion as well were the NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi; NFF’s Director of Media & Communications, Dr Ademola Olajire; Chinese Embassy’s First Secretary Ni Zhichen and NFF’s Director of Protocol, Barnabas Joro (right).

Seeking Forgiveness Brings Divine Blessings To Mankind - Imam Abdulazzez

Seeking Forgiveness Brings Divine Blessings To Mankind - Imam Abdulazzez

The Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Islamic Affairs, Imam (Dr.) Abdulrasheed Adewale , Abdulazzez  has urged Muslim faithful and particularly, Oyo State pilgrims in Mecca to continually seek forgiveness from Allah, describing Istighfar as a pathway to divine mercy, peace and abundant blessings.

The Governor's Aide gave the admonition on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, during a sermon delivered at Diyar El Shaab Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, as part of activities for the ongoing 2026 Hajj exercise.

In his sermon, Imam Abdulrasheed emphasized that seeking forgiveness from Allah brings numerous spiritual and worldly benefits, including guidance, protection, increased provision and inner tranquility. He noted that Allah, in His infinite mercy, forgives those who sincerely repent and remain steadfast in obedience to His commandments.

“Allah forgave Prophet Adam and his wife, Hawwa (Eve), after they sincerely sought His forgiveness for years following their disobedience in the Garden of Eden. This should serve as a lesson to every believer that no matter the gravity of one’s sin, Allah’s mercy is always available for those who repent with sincerity and humility. If Adam and Hawwa could obtain Allah’s forgiveness through persistent supplication and repentance, then Muslims must not despair of Allah's mercy but should constantly return to him in repentance and obedience ", Dr. Abdulazzez said.

According to him, believers must cultivate the habit of constant repentance, especially during the sacred pilgrimage period. He further stated that Istighfar strengthens the relationship between mankind and the Creator, while also promoting humility and righteousness in society. He encouraged pilgrims from Oyo State and across Nigeria to use the holy season to pray for themselves, their families and the nation at large.

Imam Abdulrasheed also offered special prayers for the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, asking Allah to elevate him and continue to grant him wisdom, strength and success in the administration of the state. He equally prayed for the Chairman of the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board (Muslim Wing), Mogaji Haseem Atere, seeking divine guidance and protection for him and all officials coordinating the Hajj operations.

The pilgrims visited important sites including the Mount Arafat area, Jabal al-Nour, Mina, Muzdalifah and other notable places. The tour enabled the pilgrims to acquaint themselves with the terrain, historical significance and spiritual relevance of the holy sites before the commencement of the core Hajj rites

The visit was approved by the Chairman of the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Mogaji Haseem Atere, as part of measures aimed at ensuring a hitch-free pilgrimage for all contingents from the state. Oyo 2026 Hajj: Makinde's Aide On Islamic Affairs Urges Pilgrims To Observe Strict Safety Guidelines

Oyo 2026 Hajj: Makinde's Aide On Islamic Affairs Urges Pilgrims To Observe Strict Safety Guidelines

The Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Islamic Affairs, Imam (Dr.) AbdulRasheed Adewale AbdulAzeez, has called on Oyo State pilgrims to strictly adhere to safety and procedural guidelines ahead of the forthcoming Hajj exercise, stressing that compliance is essential for ensuring safety and the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage rites.

In a message congratulating Oyo State Muslims at home and abroad on the sighting of the moon for Dhul-Hijjah 1447 AH — the last month of the Islamic calendar — Imam AbdulAzeez reminded pilgrims currently in Mecca that the main purpose of their journey to Saudi Arabia is drawing near and that they should adequately prepare for it.

“I congratulate all of us on the sighting of the moon, marking the beginning of the holy month of Dhul-Hijjah 1447 AH. This signifies that we are now in the month of Hajj, during which we will perform the sacred rites. You should all remember that this is the primary reason we are here.

“To ensure a successful Hajj exercise, we must all comply with the laid-down rules and regulations of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board (OYSPWB), and other relevant authorities,” he said.

According to the S A, “The sighting of the moon means we should all prepare for the real task ahead in Mecca. This begins with strict compliance with the guidelines set by the authorities to prevent fatigue, reduce congestion, and maintain order at the various holy sites we will visit.”

“I want to advise you to use this period to rest and prepare yourselves for the exercise. Hajj involves rigorous activities and is not a recreational trip. Therefore, remain indoors during the daytime as much as possible and avoid excessive exposure to the sun so that you can stay healthy and fit for the main exercise,” Imam. AbdulAzeez added.

He reassured pilgrims that the Oyo State Government, through the State Pilgrims Welfare Board, bn led by Sheikh Hashim Olamide Atere, remains committed to supporting all pilgrims to ensure a safe, orderly, and spiritually fulfilling Hajj experience.

Governor Makinde’s Aide Charges Oyo Pilgrims To Reflect True Values Of Islam In Mecca

The Special Adviser to the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, on Islamic Affairs, Imam (Dr.) Abdrasheed Adewale Abdulazeez, has charged Oyo State pilgrims in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, to reflect the true values of Islam by embracing tolerance and upholding the spirit of brotherhood.

Dr. Abdulazeez stated this on Saturday, 16 May 2026, while addressing a cross-section of pilgrims at the Madinat Al-Zahraa Mosque in Mecca. He noted that practising these virtues reflects the true teachings of Islam and makes the pilgrimage a meaningful experience for all.

The Special Adviser added that unity among pilgrims strengthens the global Muslim community and fosters a stronger sense of solidarity and compassion.

“We are grateful to Allah for counting us among those privileged to participate in this year’s Hajj. It is not because we are better than other Muslims or because we are special; it is purely by Allah’s grace and calling.

“We may have come from different towns and villages across Oyo State, but we are here for the same purpose. This purpose requires us to live together with a high level of cooperation and tolerance. The spirit of Hajj encourages pilgrims to help one another, share resources, and show kindness irrespective of differences in customs and ways of thinking. These lessons can inspire greater harmony and cooperation throughout the world,” Dr. Abdulazeez stated.

The Governor’s aide also commended the efforts of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, particularly the Chairman of the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board (OYSPWB), Dr. Hasheem Mogaji Atere, for ensuring the successful airlift of pilgrims from Nigeria to Saudi Arabia, as well as providing conducive accommodation and adequate welfare packages for pilgrims in both Madinah and Mecca.

He equally lauded Governor Seyi Makinde for his unwavering support for the Board and the pilgrims, noting that such support has continued to make Oyo State stand out among states participating in Hajj operations in Nigeria.

“We are blessed to have a Governor like Seyi Makinde in Oyo State. He is an achiever who is fair to adherents of all religions. Even before the pilgrimage, he provided the necessary resources for the Board to succeed, and this has resulted in the quality welfare packages Oyo pilgrims are enjoying in Saudi Arabia.

“So, if you are looking for a truly non-tribalistic politician, come to Oyo State. Governor Seyi Makinde is that leader,” Dr. Abdulazeez concluded.

He advised them to focus on the spiritual essence of the pilgrimage and avoid distractions capable of affecting their worship.

"We thank Allah who has made it easy for us to see the last month of Islamic Calendar. I want to use this period to remind all pilgrims to continue to uphold the image of Oyo State and Nigeria by demonstrating good conduct, honesty, unity, and mutual respect throughout their stay in the Holy Land. Also, let's remain faithful and ready for the task ahead because proper preparation and obedience to instructions are essential for the successful performance of Hajj rites", submitted Dr. Atere

Dr. Atere described the action of Alhaji Abimbola as worthy of emulation, noting that his conduct reflects the true teachings of Islam and the moral values expected of pilgrims during the holy pilgrimage. He said the gesture has not only brought honour to Oyo State but has also projected Nigeria positively among pilgrims from different parts of the world.

"We commend the good gesture of Alhaji Abimbola to have proved to the world that we are people of integrity. His decision to return the lost money without hesitation demonstrates that integrity still exists in society. I therefore encouraged other pilgrims to emulate these exemplary behaviour because acts of honesty strengthen unity, trust, and mutual respect among pilgrims during the spiritual exercise", stated Mogaji Atere.

According to the Chairman, honesty, sincerity, and fear of God remain essential virtues every pilgrim must uphold throughout the pilgrimage exercise. He stressed that pilgrims are ambassadors of their states and the country at large, urging them to always conduct themselves in a peaceful, disciplined, and trustworthy manner wherever they find themselves.

Dr. Atere also appealed to all pilgrims from Oyo State and Nigeria in general to remain law-abiding, truthful, and committed to the principles of fairness and accountability throughout their stay in the Holy Land. He prayed for a successful and hitch-free pilgrimage for all participants and urged them to continue to be good ambassadors of their families, states, and the nation.

Falconets Survive Lilongwe Scare to Keep U20 World Cup Streak Alive

Nigeria qualify for FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026

Nigeria’s U20 girls, Falconets, have officially punched their ticket to the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, after surviving a difficult afternoon in Lilongwe to emerge 3-2 aggregate winners over Malawi’s Young Scorchers.

Despite a narrow 1-2 defeat in the second leg on Saturday, the foundation laid in Ikenne seven days ago where an own goal by visiting defender Maureen Kenneth and a superb strike by Kindness Ifeanyi secured a 2-0 cushion, proved enough to sustain Nigeria’s proud record of never missing a World Cup final tournament at this level.

The hosts, backed by a vocal home crowd, wasted no time in testing Nigeria’s structural resolve. The Falconets found themselves behind early in the first half when a defensive mishap allowed a Malawian forward to nod home the opener and ignite belief in the home team’s comeback. Nigeria came close to responding with clinical precision. Kindness Ifeanyi, a constant threat on the right flank, delivered a tantalizing cross into the heart of the box. Favour Nkwocha met it with power, but her effort rattled the woodwork, denying the Falconets a vital equalizer. The Young Scorchers took their 1-0 advantage into recess.

Tension escalated in the 55th minute. Another uncharacteristic lapse in the Nigerian backline gifted the Young Scorchers their second goal of the afternoon. At 2-0 on the day and 2-2 on aggregate, the tie was on a knife-edge, and the Falconets’ impeccable qualification record was under genuine threat. With the match drifting towards a stalemate, Coach Moses Aduku turned to his bench for a spark.

It arrived in the 62nd minute via Precious Oscar. The substitute demonstrated elite pressing, pouncing on a Malawian defender who was caught dwelling on the ball. Oscar dispossessed her opponent and kept her composure to fire past the goalkeeper, restoring Nigeria’s aggregate lead and deflating the Lilongwe atmosphere.

Though the result marked a rare occasion where Aduku failed to mastermind an away victory, following dominant displays in Rwanda and Senegal earlier in the cycle, the ultimate objective was achieved. The Falconets managed the remaining minutes with professional grit to ensure that Nigeria’s flag will fly, as always, at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals.

This year’s finals will be staged by Poland, 5th – 26th September.
