FG Scraps JSS/SSS Structure, Introduces 12-Year Continuous Basic Education

FG Scraps JSS/SSS Structure, Introduces 12-Year Continuous Basic Education

The Federal Government has announced a major overhaul of Nigeria's education system, abolishing the separation between Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) and replacing the 6-3-3-4 structure with a compulsory 12-year uninterrupted basic education model.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, during the inauguration of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Ministerial Implementation and Monitoring Committee in Abuja.

According to the minister, the reform is aimed at improving access to education, reducing the number of out-of-school children, and ensuring that every Nigerian child receives 12 years of continuous, quality education before progressing to tertiary institutions or vocational training.

Alausa said the new model is designed to eliminate the transition barriers between junior and senior secondary education, which have contributed to high dropout rates among students.

He explained that the uninterrupted 12-year system would provide a more seamless learning experience, strengthen foundational and vocational skills, and improve student retention across the country.

The reform also seeks to standardise curriculum delivery, enhance education quality, and better align Nigeria's school system with global best practices.

The 6-3-3-4 system, introduced in 1982, consists of six years of primary education, three years of junior secondary school, three years of senior secondary school, and four years of tertiary education. Under the new arrangement, the JSS and SSS divisions will be merged into a single 12-year basic education programme.

The Federal Government said implementation of the policy will involve curriculum reforms, teacher training, adjustments to school administration, and collaboration with state governments and other stakeholders.

Education stakeholders are expected to closely monitor the rollout of the reform, which the government believes will improve educational outcomes and expand opportunities for millions of Nigerian children.

Game Changer: Gusau Vows To Break NFF Coaching Barriers As CAF B Course Closes

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau MON, has reaffirmed the Federation’s commitment to grassroots development and accessible coaching education pathways, following the conclusion on Wednesday evening of the CAF B-License Refresher Course organized by the nation’s football-ruling body.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Gusau thanked participants and stakeholders for their dedication to the programme. He noted that the football landscape, including coaching education, has improved significantly since his administration took office a few years ago. “When we came in, the situation was not particularly great with regards to coaching education. I believe you can all attest to the fact that significant progress has been made in this area, with the numerous courses we have had and our country’s return to the CAF A-License convention,” he said, adding that the NFF will continue to create the enabling environment needed for coaches and players to thrive.

The NFF boss also addressed concerns around certificate issuance for coaches who completed the CAF B course many years ago but have not been certificated. He assured all participants that the Federation is working closely with CAF to ensure every eligible coach receives their certificate.

He added that the NFF now has enough qualified instructors to take CAF B training programmes to states, zones, and local government areas across the country. This, he explained, removes the need for coaches to travel to Abuja. “You can be in your state, and the course will be at your doorstep. We need to educate our grassroots coaches. That is the way to go for holistic development of the game,” he added.

The NFF President stressed that football education is evolving and becoming more scientific and technical. According to him, the modern game demands that coaches stay updated with current methods and information. While the A-License course will be limited to few persons due to CAF regulations, Gusau promised that his administration will carry all coaches along in the development process.

A total of 50 coaches, who came in two streams, were refreshed during the four-day exercise, which began on Sunday.

The closing ceremony was attended by the NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi MON (himself one of the instructors); NFF Technical Director, Coach Augustine Eguavoen (also an instructor); NFF’s Head of Coaching Education, Dr Terry Eguaoje; NFF Director of Media and Communications, Dr Ademola Olajire; Coach Abdulrafiu Yusuf and; President of Nigeria Football Coaches Association, Coach Ladan Bosso.

NFF Concludes Arrangements for Six-day CAF B Refresher Course In Abuja

NFF Concludes Arrangements for Six-day CAF B Refresher Course In Abuja

The Nigeria Football Federation has concluded all arrangements for a six-day CAF B-License refresher course for Nigerian coaches, which will commence on Sunday, 21st June 2026 at the NFF/FIFA Goal Project, Abuja.

NFF Technical Director, Coach Augustine Eguavoen said on Friday that the course was necessary because several coaches with the B License require renewal and upgrading before they can proceed to the A-License level. “We have been behind for a lot of licenses, but we have before now dealt with the C and D Licenses, and also the B. So, what we are doing now is refreshing those who have the B Licenses.”

He explained that due to the high number of applicants, the refresher course would be held in two batches of 25 coaches each to ensure effective learning. “For proper learning to take place, the number has to be manageable, so we are going to be having 25 people for each of the batches. The first batch will run from June 21-23, while the second batch will hold from June 23-25. After the refresher, the NFF will determine how many coaches are eligible for the A-Licence course, which will be limited to only 25 participants.”

On the facilitators, Eguavoen said no external resource person is being invited, as NFF’s Head of Coaching Education, Dr. Terry Eguaoje will handle the sessions with support from other FIFA and CAF-certified coach educators in Nigeria.

“A number of us have been certified by FIFA and CAF as coach educators, including myself, Monday Odigie, Edema Fuludu and even the NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi. All of us can effectively handle the sessions for the CAF B refresher programme.”

Dr Eguaoje added: “We are making tremendous progress in making sure that our coaches are current in the latest coaching methodologies and certified in line with CAF coaching requirements. Upon successful completion, coaches will have their CAF B diplomas renewed, and will be eligible to apply for the upcoming A-License course starting in August 2026.”

NUJ Osun Condemns Arrest of Secretary, Demands Public Apology from Police

The Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the arrest and detention of its Secretary, Mr. Olalekan Akindoju, by officers of the Nigeria Police Force, describing the action as disturbing and unacceptable.

Mr. Akindoju, who is also the Head of News and Current Affairs at Rave 91.7FM/WSTV, was arrested in the early hours of Thursday and later released following interventions by concerned stakeholders.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Adeyemi Aboderin, the NUJ expressed concern over what it described as the arrest of a professional journalist without adequate investigation and verification.

The Council noted that the incident raised serious concerns about respect for press freedom, fundamental human rights and the rule of law.

According to the statement, journalists carrying out their constitutional responsibilities deserve protection and respect rather than harassment or intimidation.

The Council condemned what it termed the manner in which Mr Akindoju was arrested and subjected to unnecessary distress despite being a law-abiding citizen and respected media professional.

While acknowledging the intervention of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, and the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, which led to Mr Akindoju’s release, the NUJ maintained that the incident could have been avoided if proper due diligence had been carried out before the arrest.

The Council consequently demanded an unreserved public apology from the Nigeria Police Force to Mr Akindoju, his family, Rave 91.7FM/WSTV and the journalism profession for what it described as the embarrassment, inconvenience and reputational damage caused by the arrest.

The NUJ further called on the Police and other security agencies to always conduct thorough investigations and verify facts before taking actions capable of infringing on the rights and dignity of citizens, particularly media practitioners whose work contributes to democratic governance and public accountability.

Reaffirming its commitment to press freedom and the protection of journalists, the Council pledged to continue promoting a cordial working relationship with security agencies based on mutual respect, professionalism and adherence to the rule of law.

The Council also appreciated journalists, civil society organisations, stakeholders and members of the public who expressed concern and solidarity during the incident.
