Enyimba dismiss link with WAFU Cup winning Ghanaian coach

Enyimba yesterday dismissed reports that they were about signing Coach Maxwell Konadu, who just led Ghana to the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations victory over Nigeria.

After Ghana’s 4-1 defeat of Nigeria, there were media reports that Enyimba had started talks with the coach, who is also an assistant manager in the main Black Stars’ team.

Yesterday, Ghanasoccernet.com reported that Enyimba have ‘put up an audacious bid to sign Konadu after his show of tactical brilliance in the just ended WAFU competition.’

The ‘Peoples Elephant’ finished third in the just ended Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) and will compete in the CAF Confederation Cup this season.

Hyping Konadu’s credential, the report said the coach has redeemed his image by leading the home-based team to win the regional competition. It added that the former Asante Kotoko coach had his credibility and competence questioned after an embarrassing home defeat by Burkina Faso last month.

“Enyimba’s officials have already made contact with the coach but will fly to Ghana to hold further talks. The former Ghana international is most likely to take the job given that he has been demoted as the first assistant of Ghana’s senior national team,” it said.

Dismissing the report yesterday, Enyimba’s Jude Anyadufu said the former African champions were not looking for a coach, adding, “We are satisfied with our coach, so I don’t know where that story is coming from. Ignore it, there is no truth in it.”

NFF sure of Tammy's donning green and white

The Nigeria Football Federation is much closer to securing the services of Chelsea FC of England forward Tammy Abraham, according to NFF President Amaju Pinnick, codedreporter.blogspot.com.ng gathers.

Tammy has represented England at junior level but is eligible to wear the green-white-green for the Super Eagles having never played for the Three Lions.

“Most recently, there was a meeting with Tammy, which Tammy’s agent, Neil Fewills also attended. It was a useful meeting, and I can say the talks are at an appreciable level now and all is looking good.

“Tammy is like a son to me, because his father was my childhood friend. I believe he is a good prospect for the Super Eagles and the effort is well worth it.” NFF President Amaju Pinnick confirmed.

Full name Kevin Oghenetega Tamaraebi Bakumo-Abraham, Tammy scored 23 goals for Bristol City last season on loan from Chelsea FC, and is presently playing for Swansea City in the English Premiership, again on loan from Chelsea. He has scored a goal for Swansea City this season.

Born 2nd October 1997, Tammy is 1.90m tall, and is said to have immense respect for fellow Chelsea FC man Victor Moses, who also played for England at junior level before committing his senior international career to Nigeria.

Moses himself has proved a worthwhile ‘catch’ for Nigeria, emerging the Super Eagles’ most valuable player in his first tournament – the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations that Nigeria won in South Africa – and playing at the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil where the Eagles made the Round of 16.

He has also been an impact player for the Eagles in the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying race, scoring two in the 3-1 triumph over Algeria in Uyo last year and emerging Man-Of-The-Match in both encounters against African champions Cameroon earlier this month. The four points from those two games have taken the Super Eagles within a kissing distance of Russia 2018.

As the fourth official informed of two minutes extra time after the clock had signaled 90 minutes, Oyeniyi Farouk then put the icing on the cake for Olorunda FC scoring his team's second and his fifth goal of the tourney, scoring from easy tap in after a beautiful exchange of counter attacking passing.

Neither Eagle could soar as Mali and Nigeria played to a goalless draw in the opening Group A match of the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Thursday, September 14.

The first shot on goal came in the eighth minute when a goalmouth scramble inside the Nigerian box fell to Mohamed Traore, but the Eagles attacker volleyed over the target from 16-yards out.

Ten minutes later the Super Eagles had their first shot on goal when Uche Akas fired a stinging 22-yard free-kick into the arms of the Malian keeper.

In the 33rd minute Nigeria came close to scoring again when Stephen Eze met a corner-kick with a strong header, but his ten-yard effort was well-saved by the goalkeeper.

Neither side could break the deadlock before the half time whistle.

The second half started very slowly with the first attempt on goal only coming on the hour mark when Boubacar Samassekou met a free-kick from the left, but his ten-yard header sailed over the Nigerian goal.

In the 69th minute Moussa Kone was afforded a great chance to score when he drove into the box, but with just Ikechukwu Ezenwa to beat he fluffed his shot and the Super Eagles keeper made a comfortable save.

A minute later Olamileka Aniyikaye came to the rescue for Nigeria when he cleared a 12-yard shot from Mandala Konte off the goalline with his head.

Nigeria threw players forward in the final ten minutes of the game and nearly stole the win in the 85th minute when Friday John met a free-kick from the left, but his 14-yard header skimmed the wrong side of the crossbar.

The match ended goalless.

Nigeria’s next Group A match will take place on Saturday, September 16 against Guinea while Mali will face Ghana on the same day.

Aiteo Cup; Akorede Sent Osun Utd To Q-Final.

Osun United Football Club continue their good run in the Aiteo Cup as they came from a goal down to defeat Nationwide League One side, Elkanemi Babes Football Club of Maiduguri, 2-1 at the Oshogbo Township Stadium.

The Omoluabi Giants progressed to the quarter final of the Aiteo Cup with the important win over Elkanemi Babes.

Osun United started the match well and dominated much of the encounter but lacked a cutting edge in the final third as Tosin Omoyele, and Yusuf Aderemi were shy in front of goal.

The visitors took the lead in the 24th minute through Ahmadu Abubakar, well curled set piece that beats Ayo Ojo, in goal for Osun United to silent the impressive fans at the Stadium.

Osun United came into the game stronger after conceding the lone goal and Victor Okeji, took full advantage of Elkanemi Babes sloppiness at the back to level in the 31st minute to end the first half 1-1.

The result stayed 1-1 before substitute Mamud Akorede, header confirmed Osun United spot in the tourney quarter final in the 82nd minute.

The former FC Ebedei winger rose highest to head a Chinedu Emmanuel, corner kick into the back of the net to send the fans into wide jubilation.

Coach Bayo Adesina of Osun United noted, "My boys started the game on front foot, infact l didn't bother when we were trailing our visitors.

"I told them at half time to go back and finish the job convincingly and am happy they did just that. We are ready to go far in this tournament and whichever team that comes our way shall dance to our tune." Elewele as he's fondly called told codedreporter.blogspot.com.ng

I'm afraid to lose one of the best clinical finishers in NPFL---Makinwa

Coach of Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) Ilorin FC, Henry Makinwa, said he is afraid of losing one of the best clinical finishers in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), last season, Wasiu Alalade.

Makinwa told the club Media on Wednesday that seven goals in 10 games is not bad for a winger and described the former First Bank of Lagos player as one of the most professional players he has seen so far in Nigeria.

"He is very disciplined and humble and doesn't joke with his job.

"Wasiu work very hard in training everyday and that paid off for him and us when we needed him.

"His study didn't allow us to get the best of him during the cause of the season because of his exams in school.

"His combining education and football together shows how disciplined the young lad is" Makinwa said.

The former Tianjin TEDA of China attacker, said the graduate of Accounting from Kwara State Polytechnic is a player for the future which the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), should watch out for.

Makinwa said Alalade is not a flamboyant striker like late Rasheed Yekini, whose presence is threatening to defenders but he is sneaky and will finish any chance with a sight on goal.

The ABS gaffer said fans in Ilorin few weeks ago gave the winger a nickname "One Goal Per Game", when he scored in about four games consecutively both home and away.

"Wasiu is not the only talented players in ABS, there are plenty others too like Adeoti, Dada and Chindo etc.

"Not many clubs in the country will follow our policy of developing these guys.

"The average age of many of players is 20 and I'm sure not many clubs in the country would want to take the risk of prosecuting the league with players like that.

"We didn't regret we played these players because our work will paid off when we see some of these guys in the national team in the future" Makinwa said.

The Saraki Boys are still competing in the Aiteo Cup after dropping to the Nigeria National League (NNL), on the final day of the season, losing 1-2 to Nasarawa United.

Aiteo Cup: We shall win this game for our injured skipper - Okeji

Akanni Seyi

Osun United will have their hands full when they trade tackle with Elkanemi Babes of Maiduguri in the Aiteo Cup round of 16.

The Omoluabi giants who have turned Osogbo City Stadium to their fortress shall bank on their winning squad to dim off their visitor out of the prestigious tournament.

The home team coming off from their 2-0 spanking of Gateway United last weekend are yet to concede any goal at regulation time in this year's federations tournament.

No doubt, the service of the diminutive midfielder Hakeem Olalere who equally is the captain of the home side is going to be missed, as he is set to miss the encounter due to his involvement in a minor accident within the metropolis yesterday.

United's lanky winger, Victor Okeji has made some rallying call to his teammates and fans to come together and finish the job in a deserving manner in their quest to advance to the last eight of the competition.

"Though l know nothing about our opponent but we won't underrate them. This is the tournament where minnows thrive and the giants suffer.

"l am confident that the game is already done and dusted. We shall work as a unit to defeat Elkanemi Babes.

"Even the absence of our captain shall spur us on during the encounter, we shall win this game for our injured captain popularly known as 'Kebu'." Victor Okeji former Bayelsa United and Gateway striker confirmed to codedreporter.blogspot.com.ng

Aiteo Cup: Osun Babes are battle ready - Liadi

Akanni Seyi

Osogbo township Stadium this afternoon will come alive when the rivalry shall be rekindled between Omoluabi Queens and lbom Angels, in the round of 16 encounter of Aiteo Cup.

Anthony Esther and Waheed Suliyat were  on target when Osun Babes put Ibom Angels to the sword during their last meeting in Osogbo.

Osun Babes will depend on the expertise of Esther Elijah, Sarah lloduba and Yakub Sarah to curtail any threat by their opponent while the likes of  Anjor Mary, lkoyo Rejoice and Edewor Precious shall remain the counter outlet for the host.

To many football pundits, knockout football is totally different from league football and that's why the technical crew of Osun Babes FC are leaving no stone unturned ahead of the round of 16 encounter with the 'Orange Ladies'.

Coach Liadi Bashiru of Osun Babes expressed that Ibom Angels are a very good side that can spring out surprises if not fully contained. He said " I expect them to play aggressively and on the counter attacks, because they have very fast players upfront.

" Our philosophy and idea is to concentrate fully on the game and win. We have to be strong and make our fans happy. We will be playing just 2hours before Osun United and we have to win well to give our boys the extra moral and boost to go past Elkanemi Babes easily"

" It is glaring that Ibom Angels have bounced back from their disappointing NWPL season and will give all they have against us in the Aiteo Cup"  He concluded.

In the same vein, Ibom Angels Boss, Whyte Ogbonda feels his side will give a good account of themselves on wednesday and wants his girls to win outrightly.

"We are in against a tough side, we have played a couple of times in the past. We want to progress in the Aiteo Cup and a win on wednesday will do that for us.

"We have prepared so well for this game and we are fully confident ahead of this game as it is the last opportunity for us to win a silverware this season".

Both teams were drawn bye in the round of 32 of the Aiteo Cup and will have some of their regulars absent in the tie, because of national team assignment.

The duo of NWPL top-scorer Reuben Charity and Esther Elijah will be absent, as both players are up at the Falconets camp ahead of the FIFA Women U20 WorldCup qualifier against the Tanzania U20 Ladies at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on saturday.

Idoko wants total support for Plateau United’s CAF Champions League bid

Chairman Lobi Stars FC of Makurdi, Mike Idoko believes Plateau United’s qualification to participate in the Confederation of African (CAF) Champions League is a national issue, which means that the Jos soccer outfit should be assisted in all spheres to ensure the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) champions adequately represent the country in the tournament, codedreporter.blogspot.com.ng gathers.

Idoko, therefore, urged the management of all the clubs in the country to release players identified by the technical crew of Plateau United as necessary for a successful campaign in the CAF Champions League.

“Apart from Enyimba FC that adequately featured in the CAF Champions League, which it won back-to-back, no other club in this country has ever won it.

Enyimba’s victories should be attributed to Anyansi, who worked assiduously to ensure the team ruled Africa in the CAF Champions League. Since then, teams from North African countries have always dominated it.

“This time, we must all rally round Plateau United by releasing players the team’s coaches request for in the execution of its matches. We must not be selfish by holding on to the players the coaches see as good materials for the Champions League.

“Since over 40 years of the CAF competition, only Enyimba of Aba has won it twice in successive years. If it’s in terms of releasing the players of Plateau United’s choice, coaches of other clubs should be told not to hesitate to release such players to the team for the all-important national assignment. We must all come together to assist Plateau United,” said Mike Idoko

WAFU: NIGERIA SUBDUED SIERRA LEONE

Moses Okoro and Moses Peter scored a goal apiece in the final five minutes of the tie to hand Nigeria a 2-0 win over Sierra Leone in a Last 16 match during the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Monday, September 11.

Sierra Leone dominated the opening exchanges and almost took the lead three minutes in when Donald Wellington drove behind the defence, but failed to beat the Nigerian keeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, in a one-on-one situation.

Ten minutes later Donald Wellington was at it again when he met a low free-kick from the right, but again he was thwarted by the Super Eagles shot-stopper.

Ikechukwu Ezenwa was certainly at his best for Nigeria between the sticks with yet another close range save to deny Nathaniel Tongo Vula in the 15th minute when he broke behind the defence.

The Super Eagles’ first real attempt on goal only came in the 22nd minute, but Samuel Mathias fired his powerful shot inches over from 25-yards out.

Ten minutes later Sierra Leone’s Lahai Coker tried his luck from long range, but his stinging shot was well-saved by Ikechukwu Ezenwa who was keeping Nigeria in the game.

Neither side could break the deadlock before half time as the teams entered the tunnel locked at 0-0.

Five minutes into the second half Donald Wellington should have given Sierra Leone the lead when he found himself unmarked and in space 14-yards out, but he fired hopelessly wide.

Nigeria took control of the match after that and came close to scoring in the 55th minute when Uche Akas drove into the box from the left flank, but his thunderous 12-yard shot struck the side-netting.

Six minutes later Uche Akas drove into the box again and while his shot was on target this time, the Sierra Leone keeper was on hand to make a spectacular fingertip save to deny him.

In the 76th minute Amadu Barrie was gifted a golden opportunity to give the Leone Stars the lead when he broke through on goal, but with all the time in the world and just the keeper to beat, he failed to do so after shooting straight at Ikechukwu Ezenwa.

Three minutes later the action was at the other end of the park when Rabiu Ali let fly with a pile-driver from the edge of the box, but the Sierra Leone keeper made a good one-handed save turn the ball around post.

In the 85th minute Moses Okoro won the game for Nigeria with the goal of the tournament thus far after curling a 22-yard free-kick into the top left corner, 1-0.

The icing on the cake for the Super Eagles was their second goal two minutes later when Moses Peter made it 2-0.

Amoo Faults 3SC Management For Relegation

Shooting Stars coach Fatai Amoo has lamented the club’s relegation from the Nigeria Professional Football League on the final day of the 2017 season, blaming it on poor players’ welfare caused by the management.
3SC needed to beat Niger Tornadoes in Lokoja and wished results in other centres favoured them in order to avoid the drop.

But goals from Babawo Ibrahim and Ebenezer Odeyemi in the 12th and 60th minute respectively, gave Tornadoes a 2-0 win and condemned 3SC to the Nigeria National League for next season.
Also relegated alongside 3SC were ABS on the final day of the season following their 2-1 loss to Nasarawa in Lafia.
3SC and ABS’ defeats means they join Gombe and Remo Stars as the four teams relegated to the lower division.
Commenting on 3SC’s relegation, Amoo blamed the recent boycott of training by his players as one of the reasons why they could not beat the drop.
“It was unfortunate that we could not make it at the end of the day,” Amoo lamented.
“The players decided to boycott training and it’s what you have that you will give.
“The players did not have three sessions of training due to the strike. And by the time we got to Lokoja, the players were already fatigued. For me, the club allowed this to happen. This was what they also did last year.
“So it has happened and we have to face it, we have to go back and strategies to know where we have not done the right thing.”
And on his future with the club, Amoo said he was undecided yet.
He said:”It is still early for me to decide whether I will still be with the team. The season just ended. But time will tell if I will remain with them or move to another club.”
Meanwhile, Plateau United were crowned champions of the Nigeria league for the very first after they defeated former champions Rangers International 2-0 in Jos on Saturday.

LMC, NTA sign broadcast production agreement

A broadcast production agreement was on Thursday in Abuja signed by the League Management Company (LMC) and the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) for production of matches of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

The papers were signed by the LMC Chairman Shehu Dikko and Mallam Yakubu Ibn Muhammed, the Director General of NTA.

An official statement jointly signed by the heads of the two organizations indicate that the LMC and NTA would be setting up a private sector driven company to manage the business of the broadcast production.

According to the statement, “the company which shall be operated as a private, commercial venture will leverage its operations on the huge infrastructure, technical and human capacity and equipment of NTA spread across the country. The equipment includes very high grade eight Outside Broadcast (OB) Vans specially designed for football and sports coverage, which had been acquired by the Federal Government at huge cost.”

It marks a new vista in the management of broadcast content in the annals of professional football league in the country as hitherto; broadcast right holders have also produced the games. However, in the new dispensation, the LMC treading the path of some European football leagues such as the English Premier League and Spanish LaLiga, is aiming to control the production and distribution of broadcast content across all media including live streaming, terrestrial and cable platforms.

This landmark venture has been facilitated and strongly supported by the Federal Government of Nigeria represented by the Honourable Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. It is a culmination of strategic engagement initiated by LMC officials with the Minister of Information and Culture seeking to deploy the vast equipment procured by the Federal Government on behalf of NTA for past FIFA tournaments hosted by Nigeria. NTA also enjoys a robust network spread in the country with stations in every state capital and which the LMC hopes to leverage on to take the NPFL to the homes of millions of Nigerians in cities and rural communities.

Dikko, at the ceremony, explained that LMC will towards meeting modern broadcast standards, assist NTA to upgrade the OB Van equipment to ensure that contents produced will be globally competitive.

“The operation of the company, as envisaged will rely on the services of international technical partners and domestic expertise to provide the much needed vehicle for the production of high quality programmes and events for broadcast in the sports and entertainment industries. This model is in keeping with proven international best practices in sports content production, distribution and broadcast,” the two organizations declared in their joint statement.

Continuing, they gave an assurance that “as from next season of the NPFL, Nigerians are, therefore, assured of the enjoyment of high quality football matches to be produced by the independent media services company for distribution, sales and broadcast across all media platforms on a domestic and global basis.

Dikko noted that the production company will serve national objectives as it is not be restricted to just football or sports production but such other industries like entertainment and cultural, political and business events in general.

“All over the world, countries develop because they have a standard production broadcast company with capacity to serve not just the sporting industry but also the entertainment industry. We are delighted that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Information, has backed this project and we look further to other fantastic partnerships,” the LMC Chairman concluded.

"For us, this is just another step for NTA to stamp its authority as the biggest broadcast network in Africa. We have the widest reach and sports, especially football is a big industry, and we are happy to be in partnership with the LMC and NFF,” Muhammed said.

Also in attendance at the event which held inside the Conference Hall of NTA were the General Secretary of the NFF, Dr Sanusi Mohammed, Director-General of the NTA, Chief Operating Officer of the LMC, Mallam Salihu Abubakar, Samson Ebomhe, Legal Adviser to LMC and other top management staff of the NTA.
