Charged ABS FC shares spoils in Katsina

Katsina United record fourth draw at home
Katsina United recorded their fourth home draw after they were held 2 – 2 at home by a relegation-threatened ABS FC in an NPFL match day 32 fixture at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.

‘The Chanji Boys’ now occupy 13th position on the league table with 42 points from 32 games.

They will now travel to Port Harcourt to face Rivers United in their next game.

ABS have moved a spot up with this vital away point to occupy 17th position on the table with 40 points picked from 32 games.

They will next host Remo Stars.

The game started with a very low intensity as both teams were very cautious not to make mistakes.

Katsina United gradually took the game to their visitors by forcing them to concede the first corner kick.

Katsina United central midfielder Ashadi Destiny was a delight to watch as he controlled the pace of the game for the hosts in the middle of the park with some dazzling skills and defence-splitting passes that kept the visitors defenders on their toes.

Several chances were created by the hosts but they lacked the final touch as Joseph Adah, Martins Usule and Ashadi came close to opening the scoring in the first 25 minutes of play.

However, mercurial Katsina midfielder Ashadi finally broke the deadlock for the hosts on 35 minutes with a well taken long-range strike after he dribbled past three of his markers to put the hosts in front.

However, the celebration didn’t last long as the visitors replied eight minutes later through Ossy’s curling strike from the left flank to give ABS the parity.

Katsina United fought very hard to go back in front, but all their attacking moves were repelled by the the defence of ABS led by Ernest Governor as the first 45 minutes ended 1 – 1.

Adah Joseph put the hosts back in front 10 minutes into the second half after he ran towards a loose ball in the box of ABS, he took his time and placed the ball to the top corner of the net.

The visitors leveled up again from another well-taken long distance strike by Akinbo Oluwasegu to make the scoreline 2 – 2.

Obinna’s audacious strike from a free kick on the edge of ABS box could have put Katsina United back in front on 67th minutes, but it crashed against the post.

The hosts did everything possible to get the winning goal, but their efforts were futile as the game ended 2 – 2.

Pade's header nailed Akwa Utd in Maiduguri

A Spirited Akwa United suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to El-kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri on matchday 32 fixture of the Nigeria Professional Football League on Sunday.

Tchoanfine Pade's header  in the 27th minute helped the Dessert Warriors to pick the maximum three points and maintained their unbeaten home record in the league this season.

The encounter began with Akwa United stamping authority and dominating play in the opening minutes of  the game.

The Promise Keeper's early dominance seemed to have paid off in the 13th minute when striker Musa Newman put the ball in the back of the net only for his effort to be ruled out for an infringement on El-kanemi's defender.

Another attacking move by Ifeanyi Ifeanyi and Alhassan Ibrahim presented Newman with a one-on-one situation with George Micheal but the striker's shot rolled across the face of goal and went wide.

El-kanemi's first real chance of the match fell to Samuel Mathias whose long range strike was acrobatically tipped over the bar by Ishmaila Shagari in the 24th minute.

Tchoanfine Pade headed in the resultant corner kick from Alhaji Mohammed's cross to put the host in the lead as the North Eastern team ended the first half 1-0.

Akwa United continued their dominance in the second half with Ifeanyi, Alhassan and Aremu Afeez supplying Ubong Friday, Musa Newman and Cyril Olisema with sumptuous passes but the forwards failed to take advantage of the chances after the host were outplayed in greater part of the game.

Coach Maikaba introduced Hassan Babangida and Edem Akakatang to replace Cyril Olisema and Alhassan Ibrahim but the two forwards did little to change the scoreline as the hosts held on to claim victory.

Despite the defeat, Akwa United remained in third place on the log with 51 points from 32 matches while El-kanemi Warriors moved up to 5th position with 47 points from the same number of matches.

The 2015 Federation Cup Champions will continue their quest for a second away win of the season when they embark on a trip this weekend to Akure to face Sunshine Stars on matchday 33.

NNL: NPFL bound Kwara Utd secures 2-1 win over Kogi Utd

Abel Bobby's second half strike was not enough as gallant Kogi United lost 2-1 to Kwara United in an all North Central derby of the Bet9ja Nigeria National League, NNL clash in Ilorin on Saturday, codedreporter.blogspot.com.ng gathers.

The interesting Northern Conference encounter played at the Kwara State Stadium saw the hosts take the lead in the 35th minutes as Micheal Ohanu converted a penalty for the hosts after Ismail's Maiyaki was adjudged to have handled the ball from Kazeem Oseni's cross.

Ohanu doubled the lead for the Harmony Boys with the last attack of the first half as he guide his head well past Salisu Ogbe from Solomon Owello's corner.

Kogi United reduced the deficit two minutes into restart after Abel Bobby capitalized on goalkeeper Jonah Usman's howler as he tapped into an empty net.

Salisu Ogbe denied the hosts from increasing their lead with series of superb saves to put the game in close distance for Kogi United to claim anything meaningful from the match.

Both John John and Matthew Idoko almost level the score for Kogi United on different occasions.

Head coach of Kogi United, Tunde Abdulrahman believed the result was not a through reflection of his side's performance just as he challenged some calls from match officials which denied Kogi United from achieving any meaningful result.

"Well, performance wise, I'm very satisfied with what my boys played, I knew we would find it difficult to get through but they really matched them (Kwara United) well just that some decisions didn't go well for us but we defended well to put off any of their late push and I think that's huge positive for us that we will build on in our subsequent game." He told news men.

Technical Adviser of Kwara United, John Sam Obuh who expressed relief with his side's victory noted that Kogi United gave them a tough game adding that the victory has put Kwara close to picking the ticket to the Premier League.

"It's a good match, Kogi United played us very well, they are one of the good sides we have played at home, they gave us a good fight but we have to come out very hard because we've seen the way they played when we first met.

"Well this has moved us closer to where we want to be but I don't want to be too confident we have to get the job done until the last day," Obuh said.

Kogi United will take on Yobe Desert Stars at home in their next game while Kwara will travel to Kaduna to face Kaduna United.

Two first half goals from Tosin Omoyele and Chigozie Obasi, was all Osun United needed to secure a crucial 2-1 win over relegation threatened My People FC on Saturday at the Oshogbo Township Stadium.

Omoyele helped the Omoluabi Giants with the breakthrough they needed in the 30th minute as he whipped in a half-volley from Obasi low cross.

Omoyele's strike was his 11th goal of the season.

There was almost an instant response from My People with Chukwuma Chigozie, tormenting Osun United backline with his power, pace and dribbling skills but his antics were curtailed.

Obasi doubled their lead in the 43rd minute off a sublime free-kick to end the first half 2-0.

A tactical second half from the TB Joshua Boys saw them gain some sort of foothold in the game after the hour mark, and were rewarded with a consolatory goal from Chukwuma in the 62nd minute.

Omoyele had a glorious chance 20 minutes from time when picked out by a pass from Okeji, only to miss a sitter.

My People also had the chance to earn a share of the spoils but Princewill Ekwem lost a gilt-edged chance that came his way.

Osun United have garnered thirty-six (36) points from twenty-four (24) matches and will be guest to Ikorodu United next weekend at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

STAR, the official beer partner of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), kicked off a three-day clinic in
Nigeria's capital city, Abuja in a bid to share Arsenal's philosophy of football with NPFL coaches.

The idea for the clinic was conceptualized and integrated in the partnership between STAR and the League Management
Company (LMC) to support the development of the round leather game in the country especially in the top division in
Nigeria. This is the first of the benefits since the signing of the landmark partnership in 2016.

Declaring the event open, chairman of the League Management
Company and second vice president of the NFF, Shehu Dikko, charged participants at the event to pick all the positives
expected to be shared by the instructors especially the concept of attacking football being played by the London-based club
with a total focus on development and creating their own philosophy.

"I implore everyone here to ensure you use this opportunity to
learn and also share your ideas with the Arsenal coaches
present. It is not about a particular club's way of playing but the
fact remains that we are open to learning new things everyday
and all knowledge we acquire are very important for our chosen
profession," Dikko said.

Also speaking at the event, Portfolio Manager, Premier Lager
brands, Nigerian Breweries, Tokunbo Adodo reckons that the
beverage company thought about what they can add to help
develop and support the growth of the NPFL and Arsenal were
chosen for the club's consistency, development of young
players and their attractive brand of football.
"A lot of people wondered why we selected Arsenal for this first
clinic with our NPFL coaches. We actually looked at their
attractive football philosophy, youth development which has
aided their revenue generation over the years. Another reason is
the following they enjoy in Nigeria," said Adodo.
For Simon McManus who is a UEFA-licenced coach at Arsenal
in charge of technical delivery and implementation of playing
the Arsenal way, he and his technical team are ready to share
and also learn the Nigerian football model while also hoping
the coaches pick and assimilate the Arsenal way of playing soccer.

During the three-day clinic, the NPFL coaches will discuss the
key components of ‘The Arsenal Way’ of coaching, playing and
the concept. They will also be provided with theoretical support
on how to structure a coaching plan for the week and also demonstrate best practice playing style.

Alimi stars as Akure gunners humbled El Kanemi Warriors

Sikiru Alimi scored the only goal as Sunshine Stars FC edge Kanemi Warriors FC in a week 31 fixture of the 2016/17 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) played at the Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode as gathered by codedreporter.blogspot.com.ng

Alimi headed home in the 34th minute from a Nojeem Raji's long range free kick amidst confusion in the Warriors back line to hand Stars the advantage.

A game that saw few chances sparked to life moments after Alimi's goal with Chibuzor Okonkwo afterward the first to draw a save from Sunshine Stars goal keeper, Henry Ayodele from a well taken free kick. Henry's opposing figure, Agbokou Judickael was also at the end of things minutes later, this time Ezekiel Thompson came calling just inside the area but the Warriors custodian made a smart save to deny Stars a second goal.

Yahuza Bala who tormented his former side greatly during the game almost restore parity for Warriors before the break after cutting in from the right flank to unleash a fierce shot that was parried by Henry with Oke Ogagetawho on ground to make a final clearance from the goal mouth.

NPFL: Friday, Pyagbara lift Akwa Utd to Second spot

Akwa United came from a goal down to beat Nasarawa United 2-1 in a Nigeria Professional Football League Match Day 31 clash at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Sunday.

The win moves Akwa United up to second position on the log.

Aminu Kadir put Nasarawa United ahead after taking advantage of a loose ball following a goalmouth scramble to tap in with seven minutes before half time.

Ubong Friday equalized for the Promise Keepers in the 41st minute when he headed in Ifeanyi Ifeanyi's corner kick before Christian Pyagbara sealed the victory three minutes into the second half tucking in a rebound after Suraj Ayeleso spilled Cyril Olisema's close range shot.

The hostility commenced with firepower as both teams showed signs of determination which resulted in an early attacking play.

Akwa United players were motivated by the presence of the Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government SSG Sir Etekamba Umoren who was the Special Guest of Honour at the match, and the players did not disappoint.

The home team settled into the game quickly and made their first attempt at goal in the 4th minute but Ifeanyi Ifeanyi's free kick was saved by Suraj Ayeleso in the visitor's goal.

The Solid Miners then had two corner kicks in quick succession and would have gone ahead in the 13th minute but Aminu Kadir missed the chance inside the six yard box after a great delivery by Thomas Zenke.

The home side took control of the game and launched series of attacks. Friday and Pyagbara could not beat Suraj Ayeleso in Nasarawa United's goal as the goalkeeper made saves after saves to deny the the Promise Keepers.

Akwa United were left to rue their missed opportunity when Aminu Kadir capitalised on Ojo Olorunleke's mistake to scramble the ball over the line in the 38th minute, in what was the first goal conceded by the home team in their seven home matches at the Nest of Champions.

Coach Maikaba boys picked themselves up immediately and responded three minutes after conceding the goal.
Ubong Friday rose above the opposition's defense and nod home Ifeanyi's pinpoint cross from a corner kick in the 41st minute.

The forward's 7th goal of the season ensured both teams ended the first half 1-1.

Nasarawa United kick start the second half but lost possession almost immediately. Ubong Friday received a clever pass and locates Newman on the edge of the visitor's box.

The striker dribbled his way into the box and delivered a delectable pass to Olisema whose shot was spilled by Aleyeso for Pyagbara to tap in from close range to give the Promise Keepers the lead.

What followed was a catalogue of missed chances by Akwa United's front men as fans watched each miss in disbelief.

Coach Abdu Maikaba replaced Christian Pyagbara and Cyril Olisema with Gabriel Okechukwu and Christopher Lolo while Coach Kabir Dogo introduced Buhari Jaafar, Oussou Antonin and Eugene Obi into the game in the last half an hour but they did little to increase their team's tally as the Promise Keepers held on to record their 14th victory of the season and move up to 2nd on the log with 50 points from 30 matches.

Akwa United will next engage Rivers United in Port Harcourt on Wednesday in a rescheduled game, as gathered by codedreporter.blogspot.com.ng

Rivers United humbled Wikki Tourists as Akande ruled out for the rest of the season

Goals from Guy Kuemian, Emeka Ogbugh and Chiwendu Ali proved decisive for Rivers United in their 3-1 victory over Wikki Tourists on match day 31 of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

United, under pressure before kick-off, following a 0-1 reverse in their last home fixture in the NPFL against Sunshine Stars started Sunday’s game with poise, purpose and on the front foot.

An early goal looked likely following such an enterprising start and it was no real surprise when Kuemian headed the ‘Pride of Rivers’ in front in deserved fashion in the 10th minute following an expertly-delivered cross by Ali.

Both sides then traded chances at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium Port Harcourt in an exciting opening period but it was the hosts that extended their lead in spectacular fashion on the stroke of half time.

With little danger lurking and the referee poised to bring the first half to a close Ogbugh produced an outrageous moment of unadulterated quality which has now gone down in Rivers United folklore.

He met a Lukman Mohammed cross with an unstoppable volley into the top right hand corner from just outside the penalty area, an absolute thunderbolt of exquisite technique which saw the home fans erupt in massive hysteria.

It was a goal that produced catharsis for many following the pent up frustrations and tension amongst the home faithful from the past few days following the morale-shattering home defeat to Sunshine Stars four days earlier.

Wikki are however made of stern stuff; the Tourists stepped on the accelerator in the second half and got due reward five minutes after the restart when Abubakar Lawal netted to hurl his side right back into the contest.

United’s goalkeeper, Abiodun Akande suffered a horrific leg break as he unsuccessfully tried to keep out Lawal’s effort.

He will not play again this season.

That incident produced a hushed atmosphere inside the stadium with some of the United players and members of the coaching staff visibly breaking down in tears.

The ‘Pride of Rivers’ however responded like gladiators, pushing forward with intent and winning a penalty after Kuemian was fouled in the Wikki box soon after Akande was driven to hospital in an ambulance.

Ali never misses from 11 metres and stroked his effort low and hard into Sani Haliru’s right hand corner as United promptly restored their two-goal cushion.

United had several opportunities to add to their lead but profligacy by Ogbugh and Mohammed meant there was to be no more scoring in the event-filled game.

After the contest, Rivers United chief coach Willy Udube addressed the media and he praised his side for the spirited performance displayed against the visitor.

The win moved United to 14th place on the NPFL standings with 40 points from 29 matches while the Tourists who have played two games more now occupy 15th place, also with 40 points.

Fan urge NLO to investigate Teslim Balogun, Green Berets walk/over

The Nationwide League One (NLO) secretariat have been urged to set up a committee to investigate the incident surrounding the 3points and 3goals Green Berets FC gained in their Week 9 away game to Teslim Balogun FC of Lagos, codedreporter.blogspot.com.ng gathers.

The Lagos based team were walked over at home after they failed to show up for the tie against the visiting team.

A fan, who identified himself as Shola Shodehinde alleged that the game was fixed to aid the Army team gain promotion to the second tier division, Nigeria National League (NNL).

"It's sad that this kind of incident happens in our domestic league. This is a league that opt to be the foundation were young talent are groom for the Golden Eaglets, clubs in the topflight league and Flying Eagles, but match fixing is what we see.

"This is a team that has honoured all its home and away games, so I wondered why they choose not to show up against Green Berets, so I suspect foul play.

"For me to take the NLO serious, they must set up a committee to investigate the game and also follow their rule book by placing sanctions on the home team.

"I know that the provisions of the rules and regulations of the NLO, specifies that a team who deliberately and intentionally refuse to honour its home fixture for whatever reasons with just two (2) games to end the season, has no business honoring the immediate last away match for the same reason and that club should then deemed to have excited the league, while its matches and points are cancelled in the Interest of fair play.

"It should be noted, that the rules actually stipulates three (3) matches which is expected to apply to a full and normal football season but this is an abridged format and precisely two (2) games to end of the season which could be said to be nicely done and executed to favour Green Beret.

"The best option therefore is to indict the two clubs particularly the home team, by throwing them out of the league so as to negate the intended advantage the walk over aimed."

Falode condemns NWPL unruly act

Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) board has condemned in strongest term the ugly incidents in two match venues of top-flight matchday 12 clash in Nembe, Bayelsa state and Fufore, Adamawa state.

The clash between hosts, Bayelsa Queens and Sunshine Queens at the Nembe City Stadium which ended 1-0 in favour of the home side saw the goalkeeper of the Akure side, Elizabeth Johnson with a severe bloodied nose said to be an attack on her by unidentified fans.

In another scenario at the Atiku Abubakar Stadium in Fufore, the clash between the hosts, Adamawa Queens and visitors, Osun Babes ended inconclusively as a result of dispute that arose from the second goal credited to the home side.

Alarmed by the blood-curdling and unprecedented events of the weekend, the chairman, Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), Aisha Falode said in no unmistakable voice that adequate measure will be taken to stamp out violence and other untoward act in whatever colouration in the women league.

“What happened in Nembe and Fufore is condemnable by any sane person and we condemn it without reservation.

“We will not tolerate bloodletting, violence or unruly behaviour in whatever guise irrespective of reason(s) or person(s).

“We will duly investigate the remote and immediate causes of the sad events and those found culpable and wanting in whatever form will be made to bear the full weight of the rules guiding the league.

“We condemn the win-at-all-cost syndrome the women’s league remains beautiful and must be enjoyed by all whether the result favours or disfavours the parties involved.

“What transpired in Nembe is clearly alarming and unprecedented in the history of women league.

“The name of the game is fair play and that should be the underlying principle guiding the parties at all times.

“Of course, the NWFL board will insist on replay in the inconclusive match between Adamawa Queens and Osun Babes as the culprit(s) will be made to pay for it.

“There is a well spelled out channels of appeal and grievance to explore by any party who feels short-changed at any given time.

“We are engaging with the parties in the Fufore’s incident and be rest assured there will be consequences at the end of the day.

“We do not want to pre-empt anyone but we insist that not even the chase of Super Four tickets or avoidance of the drop should warrant any act of lawlessness or bloodletting as shown in the Nembe game,” said Falode.

The Bayelsa Queens’ win keep the side at the summit of NWPL Group A on 22 points with two matches left on the season’s calendar while Adamawa Queens and Osun Babes have 20 points each on Group B log behind leaders, Delta Queens pending the determination of their inconclusive matchday 12 clash.

Two topmost teams in each group will qualify to play in the Super Four at the end of regular season to determine the league champions.

NPFL: AKWA UNITED SECURES RARE POINT IN UMUAHIA

Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia's ambition to finish among the elite group  in the on-going Nigeria Professional Football League suffered another setback today when they were held goalless by visiting Akwa United in one of the week 30 games decided at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

It was actually a match the Warriors could have won if their strikers were more articulate in front of goal and they paid dearly for it as Akwa gained in confidence to record a second consecutive goalless draw in Umuahia in as many seasons.

Akwa United also had the opportunity to break the deadlock but the likes of Christian  Pyagbara and Alhassan Ibrahim either shot wide or were frustrated by Abia Warriors goaltender, Agbor Ekoi who stood out.

With the result, the Warriors lost some grounds as they are now placed 13th on the 20-team league table  after 30 games.

Next for the Warriors is a game against Niger Tornadoes of Minna at the Confluence Stadium in Lokoja on Sunday while Akwa return to Uyo to host Nasarawa Utd of Lafia.

FG to compel corporate sponsorship of NPFL

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, says the Federal Government will amend the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Code to compel brands to sponsor Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, codedreporter.blogspot.com.ng gathers.

The minister made the assertion at the close of the “Two-Day Creative Industry Financing Conference,” sponsored by the ministry in conjunction with “Think Tank Media and Advertising” which closed on Tuesday in Lagos.

“We will amend the NBC code to ensure that our Premier League improves.
“We will make sure that in the Code, if you spend one million dollars to support a foreign football club like Manchester United in Nigeria, you will not be allowed to air that programme unless you spend 30 per cent of that money to promote Nigeria’s league.

“Some beverage companies in Nigeria support Manchester United (Man U), Arsenal and others and spend about $6 million a year,’’ he said.

“I then asked the question, how much of their products are being consumed over there?
“I was also told that a particular brand of Nigeria Beer is supporting several premier league teams to the tune of $7 million a year.

“We can imagine if they give us just 30 per cent of that, we will fix our stadia.
“I know they are going to attack me on this but I am not made a minister to sustain the economy of other countries.’’

He said the government could no longer fold its arms and watch a situation where people continue to develop the economy of other parts of the world from the toil of Nigerians and at the expense of Nigeria’s economy.

Remo Stars Football Club (RSFC) bright and breezy midfielder, Chidume Victor has dedicated his goal at Makurdi to his late father, late Mr Charles Emengini Chidume, codedreporter.blogspot.com.ng gathers.

Speaking with RSFC Media,Chidume said: “It’s a great feeling, especially for my dad.

NPFL: Akwa Utd in Umuahia for Points- Maikaba

After their three nil thrashing of Gombe United on Matchday 29 of the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Sunday, 3rd placed Akwa United will this Wednesday slug it out with  neighbours, Abia Warriors at the Umuahia Township Stadium in one of Matchday 30 fixtures of the NPFL.

The Promise Keepers will welcome back forward Ubong Friday into the starting line up after the striker served his one match ban.

Akwa United will be aiming to do the double over 11th placed Abia Warriors who lost their weekend's clash against El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri by a lone goal. Bashir's Strike Tame Unlucky Stars

Sunshine Stars FC have their luck to rue as Abdulrahman Bashir's first half goal helped Nasarawa United FC secured victory against the Akure Landlords in a week 29 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) tie at the Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode on Sunday.

Bashir's 39th minute strike was the only effort that had the net bubbled in a game Sunshine Stars FC dominated from start to finish before a cheering group of spectators and fans for the first time in five home fixtures.

The dominant Stars who succeeded in confining the Solid Miners to their own half almost all through the second period came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock on different ocassions through Sikiru Alimi, Ajibola Otegbeye, Sunday Abe and arguably the man of the match, Dayo Ojo, but were denied repeatedly by the woodwork.

United's goalkeeper, Suraj Ayeleso will later make a superb stoppage time save to deny Sunshine Stars FC a certain equaliser off Thompson Ezekiel's volley, before Bashir squandered a glorious chance to get his second of the day in a game that the referee exhibited firmness and fairness all through.

Sunshine Stars who failed to score for the first time in seven consecutive matches next face Rivers United FC at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium on Wednesday in NPFL week 30 pairing.

NPFL: Rivers United, ABS share spoils in Ilorin

There was to be no ‘late break’ for Rivers United as Rivers United produced a gutsy albeit workmanlike performance in Sunday’s 0-0 draw against ABS FC as the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) enters match day 29.

Abiodun Akande was the star of the show, a force ofnature and the most outstanding Rivers United performer as the ‘Pride of Rivers’ held out for a share of the spoils at a charged Illorin Township Stadium.

The young goalkeeper produced a string of fine saves to keep Rivers United alive as the ‘Pride of Rivers’ claimed a share of the spoils in an intense and compelling battle at the Ilorin Township Stadium.

ABS’ forwards also conspired to fritter away a plethora of chances as the Port Harcourt club rode their luck for most parts to claim an important point on the road.

Mohammed Mohammed was the first ABS forward to spurn a good opening in the sixth minute when his shot was expertly turned away from goal by the impressive Akande before Ossy Eugene headed over just seconds later.

Eguene looked inspired and had two cracks at the United goal in a space of a minute just before the quarter hour mark but on both occasions, Akande won the war of wits.

In the 26th minute, the hosts missed another chance to take what would have represented a deserved lead when Ossy shot into the side netting from a tight angle with just Akande at his mercy.

The pressure was mounting on the visitors’ goal and a few seconds after Ossy’s miss, Mohammed came face to face with Akande only to fire into Orbit with a gaping goal to aim at, much to the disbelief, chagrin and consternation of the watching home fans.

Three minutes later, Mohammed again unbelievably skied an effort over with the Akande the only obstacle in the United goal.

It was a surreal turn of events but the visitors continued to ride their luck and almost took the lead, against the run of play, three minutes before half time just moments after Adeshina Gata missed another good chance to put the hosts in front.

The United chance on that occasion, fell to Bolaji Sakin who struck his effort well enough only to be denied by a spectacular Abdullahi Boje save with the ball arrowing into the top corner.

If the first half was breathless, the second was a frenetic affair as the home side stepped on the accelerator in a bad to amass maximum point in front of a vociferous crowd.

They made a start of urgency and were almost rewarded in the 52nd minute following a lightening counter attack but Adeshina Gata side footed Mohammed’s cut back wide.

Two minutes later, United responded through the lively Sakin whose inch-perfect cross was headed marginally wide by Bernard Ovoke.

ABS continued to look menacing and dangerous and almost opened the scoring on the hour but Gata inexplicably shot wide from four yards with a gaping goal to aim at.

It was an extraordinary miss which left the home faithful stunned and wondering what their forwards needed to do to get the rub of the green.

United’s best chance arrived in the 71st minute and it fell to Ovoke who raced all of 20 metres before having his firmly-struck effort kept out impressively by Boje.

Six minutes later, ABS had another opening, this time Mohammed was the culprit as he curled over with only Akande in the United goal.

Muiz Adeoti had two late chances kept out by Akande, the second, in the sixth minute of second half added time, from point blank range as United held out for a fortuitous point.

Rivers United thus move up one place on the log to 13th with 37 points from 27 matches while ABS dropped one place to 18th as they have now amassed 36 points from 29 matches.

OBAJE'S SOLITARY STRIKE SEALS WIN FOR FC IFEANYIUBAH AGAINST ENYIMBA INT'L FC IN THE ORIENTAL DERBY

Godwin Obaje's solitary strike in the 50th minute was all the Anambra Warriors needed to take all points at stake in a keenly contested Matchday 29 Oriental Derby clash played at the FC IfeanyiUbah International Stadium Nnewi on Sunday.

The technical crew led by Coach Yaw Preko made just two changes to the side that were forced to a scored draw last Tuesday in Shagamu against Remo Stars as Loute Isaac and Ikeokwu Patrick leapfrogged Osia Felix and Baadu Isaac in the starting 11.

The Anambra Warriors kicked off proceedings on a very bright note with foray of attacking moves from the flanks with Huan John and Aggreh Prince tormenting the Elephants' defence in the early exchanges, Ngoma Luamba had his headed effort from a delightful fly through ball from Huan's well taken kick in the 4th minute just above the upright.

Goalkeeper Dauda Fatau had to come of his line in the 18th minute to punch clear an inviting ball from Aggreh directed towards Chijioke Alaekwe. Minutes after that his opposing number Drissa Bamba also made a telling clearance from an Ibrahim Mustapha's freekick for a corner kick which the elephants failed to do the needful with. In the 28th minute, John Huan should have done better with his shot which went wayward from an Obaje's cross from the left flank coming off the head of Ogbonnaya Nelson.

In the 34th minute Huan John was also at the centre of another good ball from a well laid pass into his path thanks to an overlapping Isaac Loute's sumptous diagonal ball to Alaekwe but however Huan ballooned his effort high and wide. Three minutes before recess Obaje Godwin got to a through ball from Ikeokwu Patrick but his heavy touch let him down as Goalkeeper Dauda was on hand to make the easiest of saves.

The second half just like the first was everly going to be more entertaining with certain level of fluidity showcased by both sides in the first four minutes. The curtainraiser would eventually come in the form of 12th goal of the season for Godwin Obaje in the 50th minute as he held of his marker to put the ball beyond Goalkeeper Dauda from Ngoma Luamba's assist.

Dimgba Stanley came close to restoring parity in the 56th minute for the Peoples' Elephant after receiving a pass from Kester Kelly but Adeleye Olamilekan was on hand to provide the needed shield. Chijioke Alaekwe's shot in the 61st minute sailed inches wide. Substutute Bright Onyedikachi four minutes after came close to scoring with his shot richocheting off Alakwe as Goalkeeper Dauda did the needful rushing off his line to make a save. There were plethora of nail biting moments for both sides and mild scuffle from both sets of players in the closing stages with the Anambra Warriors holding on to seal victory after two minutes of time added on by the 4th official elapsed.

FC IfeanyiUbah retains its 6th position on the log with 45 points from 29 matches played ahead of the upcoming midweek clash with league toppers Plateau United away at the Rwang Pam Stadium in Jos come wednesday.

CHAN QUALIFIERS, TOGO - BENIN CLASH ENDED IN A DRAW

Togo and Benin played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their 2018 African Championships qualifier at the Stade de Kégué in Lomé on Sunday.

Benin controlled the opening half despite playing away from home and took a deserved 1-0 lead into the break thanks to a 44th minute goal from Marcellin Koukpo.

The second half saw Togo playing much better and they managed to level matters in the 48th minute courtesy of a goal from Koidjo Sewonou, 1-1.

The home side had the majority of possession after that, but were unable to find a second goal as the game ended all-square.

Benin do have the advantage heading into the second leg of the qualifiers next week in Cotonou thanks to their away goal.

NNL: Papilo FC nailed Osun United in three goals thriller

It was a keenly contested game as Papilo FC first half goals secures the maximum three points for the host in one of week 22 fixtures of the Bet9ja, Nigeria National League at the Dan Anyiam stadium Owerri.

The host dictated the tempo  in the early minutes of the game as Uchenna Njoku and  Taylor Adebayor brilliant moves unravelled Osun United defensive set up.

The visitors nearly settled fully before Babma Bakari squares in brilliantly, Nurudeen Lateef in goal for Osun United parried the ball in the direction of the hosts' striker, Adebayor Taylor whose half volley from point blank opened the account for the host.

Omoluabi Giants through Dare Olatunji and Tosin Omoyele asked questions successively as their efforts were inches wide having benefitted from the lofty range of Olalere Hakeem.

Osun United responded with a goal two minutes from half hour mark, when Olalere Hakeem launches an interchange with Chinedu Emmanuel and the latter's cross was unerringly scrambled into the hosts' net by onrushing Jide Fatokun.

The jubilation nearly lasted when Uchenna Njoku increased the tally for his side after beating the offside trap in United's dangerous area at the stroke of half hour mark.

Victor Okeji's strike at the tale end of the first half would have  ensured an evenly distributed opportunities after lacing Obasi's long range outwards from twelve (12) yards.

The game was fast and furious deep into second half, given the cagey approach from both sides, with the visitor dictating the pace intermittently.

Omoyele was brought down by Akanni Richard at the edge of Papilo's box after turning in Kajas Ifeanyi at exactly an hour mark, Chinedu Emmanuel sublimely nodded the resultant free kick past Omoregie Nobas in goal for Papilo FC only for assistant referee to flag his brilliant dive offside.

Memud Akorede was later called upon in a substitution that made the captain Hakeem Olalere to give way with ten minutes remaining. The visitors once again was unfortunate as the center referee canceled another towering header by Jide Fatokun which resulted in goal.

The two goals were enough for Papilo FC as referee brought the game to an end amidst tension.

The score line ensures the four (4) game unbeaten runs of the visitor has ended.

Believe and Achieve Gladiators shall welcome Warri Wolves at the Osogbo Township Stadium next weekend in the match day 23 of the Nigerian National League.

NNL: The Promotion And Relegation Battle

Week 22 in the Southern Conference of the NNL heats up as teams are trying to move on to the next level while others will remain at this level, whether they like it or not and others will drop to the level below, unfortunately

After different results last weekend, teams are now ready to bounce back to their winning ways or remain as they were.

Warri Wolves v Delta Force: This is the match of the weekend. Its a family game, if you like. Both teams are from the same state and funded by the same government. It is the South South Local Derby or #SSLD

The hosts lost to Papilo narrowly and couldn't win their last home game against First Bank FC. A loss on home soil would spell doom for the Wolves. They know they can't afford to lose this match. They lost the reverse fixture 1-0. This time, they will do everything to win. Delta Force on the other hand have done well for themselves. Coming to Lagos to collect all 3pts is something they had craved in order to gain promotion to the top flight. A draw would look like a win for them though.

Crown FC v First Bank FC: Both teams lost by same margin last weekend. Playing at home would give the hosts some sort of confidence going into the match. Lying 3rd on the log isn't much succour for them. They've got to win this and pray results from elsewhere favour them

The visitors are battling relegation already. Another loss could confirm the battle but they've picked up points on the road before. Achieving that feat is still possible.

Bendel Insurance v Nnewi Utd: The hosts boast of the support of their Deputy Governor but so far, they've not been able to make him happy in the road recently. They lost 2-1 last week. They will try to return to winning ways against a side that beat Crown FC 3-1. Another win for them will see them surge up the log but the hosts are closing the gap bit by bit at the top

AS Racine v Go Round FC: They felt hard done in Owerri last weekend when they lost to the league leaders. So many events took place there. The hosts gave a good account of themselves in Owerri but ended up empty handed. They will host Go Round who have not dropped a point at home. They were also good on the road in the first round but they have come up short so far. A win for the visitors could change things at the top.

Akwa Starlets v Heartland FC: After a disappointing result in Lagos against Ikorodu Utd, in which they conceded two early goals, the hosts will seek to stop or at best slow the league leaders' pace with either a draw or a victory over them. The visitors know that a win for their rivals and a loss in Uyo could put their position in jeopardy. Starlets have been strong at home this round but Heartland FC are also good on the road.

Abia Comets v Ikorodu Utd: An impressive draw in Lagos and a win this weekend would put the icing on the cake for Comets. Ikorodu Utd are also smarting from that victory over Akwa Starlets. It seems the visitors are poised to avoid relegation. A win or draw here could help their cause.

Unicem Rovers v My People FC: A narrow loss in Osogbo didn't taste well in the mouths of the Rovers team. They will want to address that by winning in front of their homes fans in Calabar. The visitors could only manage a draw at home last weekend. They will seek to continue that streak away from home as relegation looms for them. They are bottom of the log.

Papilo FC v Osun Utd: The hosts are playing their second straight home game and it's an added advantage for them. They won the first game last week against Warri Wolves and another win might be on the cards for them. After starting the season so well, Osun Utd have fallen by the way side in the quest for promotion. They have some good results away from home, especially in Lagos but their home games haven't been too tidy. They will also go for all the points available.

Reprieve for Pillars, Sunshine as LMC lifts Ban on Fans

Reprieve came for Kano Pillars and Sunshine Stars as the closed gate ban which prohibited the two clubs from admitting spectators was Wednesday, lifted by the League Management Company (LMC) which granted the two clubs two match probation to test their security arrangement.

In separate letters communicating the decisions to the two clubs, the LMC said the stadium ban was lifted under probation following a review of the conditions set out in the original order that suspended the admission of spectators to their home matches. The LMC said that it would during the next two home matches of the two clubs, assess the level of compliance with the revised safety and security measures put in place by the clubs.

However, Sunshine Stars banishment away from Akure Township Stadium to Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium subsists as the LMC ruled that the Akure Township Stadium would only be admitted to host Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matches after confirming that the club has fully complied with the required measures.

Some of the conditions Kano Pillars was issued include provision of revised match day security plan, evidence of prosecution of complicit individuals and evidence of fans and supporters education workshops.

For both clubs, full and final decisions would be announced after the two matches they would host.

In another development, the LMC ruled that the result of the match day 28 fixture between Enyimba and Niger Tornadoes will stand as the petitioner; Niger Tornadoes could not provide evidence to support the application of Rule C5.

Tornadoes had filed a petition seeking to have three points and three goals awarded the club on the grounds that Enyimba fielded a player, Ikechukwu Ibenegbu that was suspended for the match following the accumulation of five yellow cards.

In their defense, Enyimba submitted that they did not intentionally field the player as the notice of suspension did not reach them. They also made references to similar incidences last season in which they alerted Nasarawa United in Makurdi that they were about to field a suspended Thomas Zenke and the player was dropped. Similarly in Port Harcourt last season, Kano Pillars brought to the attention of Enyimba that they were about to field a suspended Nzube Anaezemba leading to Enyimba dropping him. They therefore contended that Tornadoes did not play fair by witholding information only to turn to protest.

The LMC’s finding was that Tornadoes failed to raise the protest neither at the pre-match meeting nor at any point prior to the commencement of the match which would have established a case of intentionally fielding an ineligible player as envisaged under the relevant section of the rule,

“…suspension notices are sent to both clubs involved in any match in question in order for disputes over eligibility of players to be addressed prior to the match. Note that where a protest is made against the eligibility of a player prior to a match and the other team insists on fielding such player, upon confirmation that the player was ineligible, it would likely be established that the team intentionally featured such a player as envisaged under Rule C5”, read the LMC decision signed by Salihu Abubakar, the Chief Operating Officer.

While dedicating the award to his teammates and club supporters, the forward promised to do more to help the team strengthen their quest to retain a place in the NPFL.
And to his coach, he expressed gratitude for allowing him a free role to express himself and providing the tutorial that has boosted his confidence on the pitch and improved his game.
Usman said: “I wouldn’t have achieved this award without the support of my teammates and our fans. I dedicate this award to them.

“I also thank coach Nikiyu. He has always told me to be adventurous, especially whenever I am in the box, that I should try and penetrate and that if my effort does not go inside the net, somebody will be there to finish it.

It has been a long lane to honours for Ahmed whose football path has led him through local clubs in Bauchi, including Zabgai FC and Yankari FC, but he reserved a huge appreciation for Wikki’s new coach, Bala Nikiyu, for granting him more playing time on the pitch than he had ever had previously.

Ahmed has four goals to his name so far this term, but the Match Day 24 goal against Niger Tornadoes in a 3-1 win for the Tourists has had him in national focus and the player said shortly after the ceremonial presentation of the N150,000 prize money the goal, which was his second of the season, will mark the beginning for more.

“I feel so happy for winning the VAT Wonder goal award. That was my second goal of the season and I hope it will be the beginning of good things to come for me as a player,” said Usman, who had since doubled that tally in four other games.

“I am enjoying this moment. It is my high point of the season so far and I hope to do more.”
